MCCOOK, Neb. – The Creighton softball team split a doubleheader with Northern Colorado on Friday afternoon edging the Bears 3-2 in game one before falling 11-3 in the second contest at the Jaycees Sports Complex.
Creighton (4-3) and Northern Colorado (3-4) decided to play a doubleheader halfway between their campuses at the home field of McCook (Neb.) Community College after the schools' scheduled tournament at the University of Arkansas was cancelled earlier this week.
CU sophomore Jen Daro led the Creighton offense with five hits on the day. Senior Liz Dike went 4-for-6 at the plate while junior Blake Ringle belted her third home run of the year and posted a team high three RBI Friday. Eight Bluejays connected on a hit in the twin bill.
Junior Micaela Whitney earned the start for CU in game one. She opened with four strikeouts in the first two frames and retired the Bears in order through three straight innings.
Meanwhile Creighton's offense started the scoring in the bottom of the first. A one-out walk by junior Michelle Trulin was followed by an RBI triple off the bat of Dike. It marked Dike's third triple of the season through six contests. Ringle stepped up to the plate and ripped an RBI single to score Dike and give the Bluejays an early 2-0 lead.
Northern Colorado got on the board in the top of the fourth with an unearned run following a Creighton error to cut the CU advantage in half at 2-1.
Creighton loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth but bounced into two infield grounders leading to a pair of force outs at the plate. A long fly ball to center from Dike ended the CU threat.
A solo home run by UNC evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth.
Creighton broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth. A single by junior Erin McGonigal opened the inning. Classmate Kelsey Allender put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. A bunt single by Trulin put runners on the corners before UNC intentionally walked Dike to load the bases with one out.
Two batters later Daro came through with the game-winning RBI single to score McGonigal. Trulin was tagged out between third and home to end the inning.
Whitney struck out the side in the top of the seventh to secure the Creighton victory and improve to 4-1 on the year.
In game two Daro made her career pitching debut for the Bluejays.
Northern Colorado's bats erupted early with nine runs and 10 hits on three home runs, including a grand slam, and never looked back.
Creighton scored three in the top of the third to cut the margin to 9-3. Trulin drew a one-out walk and later stole second before Daro connected on a double to center to score the run. Up next Ringle hammered her third homer of the young season to tally two more scores.
After two scoreless innings, UNC wrapped up the contest in the bottom of the sixth with a home run and an RBI single.
Creighton returns to action next weekend at the Tulsa Invitational in Tulsa, Okla. on Feb. 27.
