OMAHA, Neb. - Led by senior Alexis Akin-Otiko's 17 points, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Marquette, 82-60, on Feb. 22. Following the game Akin-Otiko as well as seniors Sammy Jensen and Taylor Johnson were recognized.
With the win Creighton moved to 16-11 on the season and 9-7 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette fell to 8-20 overall and 4-13 in conference play.
The Bluejays got a charge right out of the gate as Johnson started the game with the first five points. The mini charge provided by the Missouri native, was indicative of Creighton's play throughout the game. Leading 15-12 midway through the opening period (13:20), the Bluejays stretched their edge to 20-12 on a bucket from freshman Jade Owens and a trey from junior Marissa Janning.
Up 30-22 with 6:16 remaining, Creighton put the game away with nine straight from long range. Sophomores MC McGrory and Lauren Works knocked down the first two, then Akin-Otiko knocked down another trey giving Creighton a 39-22 edge (3:21). The Bluejays led by as much as 18 in the half and took a 47-30 lead into the break, powered by nine three-pointers.
Both teams success from long range slowed in the second half, but 11 points from Janning as well as 16 points in the paint kept Creighton well in front of the Golden Eagles.
Janning and Akin-Otiko finished with a team-high 17 points, while sophomore Brianna Rollerson finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Creighton's victory on Sunday secured at least a sixth seed in the BIG EAST tournament (March 7-10). Meaning the Bluejays will avoid playing on the first day of the tournament.
Creighton will conclude the regular season next week as the Bluejays battle Georgetown on Friday, Feb. 27 and Villanova on Sunday, March 1.
