WASINGTON, D.C. - With five players in double figures the Creighton women's basketball team held off a late surge from Georgetown to earn a 71-62 win on Friday, Feb. 27.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 17-11 on the season and 10-7 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown fell to 4-25 overall and 2-15 in conference.
After watching Georgetown use a 9-0 run to pull within a points (62-61), junior Marissa Janning and sophomore Lauren Works delivered game-changing buckets to push Creighton to its eighth win in nine games.
Janning rose to the challenge first with a driving layup along down the right side to end the Hoyas surge. Each team came up empty on the following two possessions, but a free throw from Georgetown made it 64-62 with 2:20 left. Following another set of defensive stops, Works fielded a pass from senior Alexis Akin-Otiko with just a hair of space. The Lincoln native made the Hoyas pay with with her third trifecta. Creighton hit five-of-six from the charity stripe down the stretch to put the game away.
Early in the game the Bluejays built a 24-12 lead in the opening half, thanks to an 11-2 run. Leading 13-10 midway through the half (13:07), Works knocked down the Bluejays fourth trey of the game to ignite Creighton's run. Sophomore Brianna Rollerson dropped in a layup to make it 18-10. The following possession saw Works drain another trey, then after a Georgetown bucket Rollerson scored again in the paint. Akin-Otiko wrapped up the run with one of two to line.
Five Bluejays finished in double figures led by 14 from Janning and Akin-Otiko. Sophomore MC McGrory added 12 points, while Works and freshman Sydney Lamberty finished with 11 points.
Georgetown's Didi Burton led the Hoyas with 13 points, while Yazmine Belk finished with 11.
Creighton moved to 11-0 on the season when leading at the half.
The Bluejays close out the regular season on Sunday, March 1 as Creighton faces Villanova at 12 pm.
