NEWARK, N.J. -- Angel Delgado's putback with 15.9 seconds left provided the winning margin as Seton Hall defeated Creighton 67-66 on Saturday afternoon in Newark, N.J. The win was the third straight game between the schools decided by one point, and second this season.
Creighton is now 13-16 on the season and 4-12 in BIG EAST action, while Seton Hall improved to 16-12 and 6-10 in league play.
Creighton came out of the gates strong, getting four points from Geoffrey Groselle and a trey by James Milliken to lead 7-0 and prompt a quick Seton Hall timeout. After the Pirates trimmed that deficit to 9-5, Creighton broke free as Avery Dingman and Devin Brooks buried shots off the bench and Rick Kreklow and Austin Chatman drained three-pointers to make it 21-9 and force another timeout.
A Groselle dunk gave CU its largest lead of the game at 23-9 with 9:34 left. Seton Hall then countered with the next nine points, including five points from Haralds Karlis, before Creighton called for time to regroup. Following the break, Chatman had eight points during Creighton's 11-6 flurry to give CU a 34-24 lead at intermission.
Chatman had 13 points in the first half, while Kreklow dished four assists and Dingman recorded three blocked shots.
Seton Hall scored the first five points of the second half to cut its deficit in half, but Kreklow converted a three-point play to kick-start a 9-2 run that put the Jays back up 43-31 with 16:48 to play.
Seton Hall quickly responded, putting together a 16-5 surge to draw within one. The Pirates missed a shot to move ahead, then Chatman drained a huge trey before a Milliken bucket in transition put CU up 53-47 with 10:51 to go.
Seton Hall fought back, tying the game at 55-55 with 9:19 left on Khadeen Carrrington's corner three-pointer, but CU withstood the damage temporarily with a Zach Hanson putback and a pair of Brooks free throws prevented CU from falling behind.
After CU led by five, Carrington scored on consecutive trips to draw SHU within one at 64-63 and 2:14 to play. Carrington later gave Seton Hall its first lead of the day at 65-64 with 1:22 left after two foul shots.
Creighton would miss a long trey by Milliken, but Kreklow chased down the rebound and Chatman sank a long jumper from the top of the key to put CU up 66-65 with 29.5 left.
Isaiah Whitehead drove the lane on Seton Hall's last trip, but would miss. Delgado grabbed his 11th rebound of the day and scored to go-ahead with 15.9 left. Creighton had several chances to win. After Chatman was stripped while shooting, Milliken, Groselle and Milliken (again) all missed putback tries amid contact in the final frenzied seconds before the clock expired.
Chatman scored 23 points, one off his career-high, while sinking a career-high five three-pointers. Also in double-figures with 11 points each were Groselle and Brooks. Creighton shot 40.6 percent on the day and 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) from deep.
Karlis tied his career-high with 14 points for Seton Hall, while Carrington and Delgado each added 11. Delgado contributed a game-best 11 rebounds for Seton Hall, which won the rebound battle 41-31 on the afternoon. Seton Hall shot 46.6 percent for the day, but were 18-of-30 (60 percent) after intermission.
Creighton winds up the regular-season with a pair of home games next week, beginning with Tuesday's 8:15 pm tilt vs. No. 6 Villanova.
NOTES: Avery Dingman became the first Creighton player with three blocked shots in the first half of a game since Gregory Echenique had three rejections at Saint Mary's on Feb. 23, 2013 ... Austin Chatman's five three-pointers were a career-high and came in his 100th career and consecutive start ... Creighton trailed for just 65 seconds all day.
