Series with St. John's
The Bluejays and Red Storm have met six times, including three in 2013-14. St. John's holds a 4-2 series edge, including the meeting earlier this season.
Series with Seton Hall:
Creighton and Seton Hall met for the first time last season as the Bluejays joined the BIG EAST conference. Creighton holds a 2-1 series edge.
Scouting St. John's (15-6, 6-4 BIG EAST)
After opening the season with 12 wins in their first 13 games, the Red Storm have dropped three of five. St. John's has lost two in a row, but are returning home for the first time since Jan. 18.
The Red Storm are a team built on defense, allowing just 56.5 points per game. The Bluejays first meeting with St. John's this season may have been the Red Storm's best defensive effort, surrendering just 38 points.
Offensively St. John's is a two woman show as Aliyyah Handford (20.6 ppg) and Danaejah Grant (18.1) score better than 60% of the Red Storm's points.
St. John's does not go deep into its bench as the Red Storm have played just seven in each of the last two contests. The two reserves have combined to play 40 minutes over those two contests.
Keys to the Game w/St. John's:
- Stop Dribble Penetration: Both Handford and Grant create their offense off the
dribble. While easier said than done, making Grant and Handford either pass or become jump shooters is critical. - Take Care of the Ball: St. John's defense is designed to cause chaos to create easy offense for the Red Storm.
- Expose the small roster: The Red Storm are a physical team, thus can fall into foul trouble. St. John's bench can be exposed if you get to them.
Scouting Seton Hall (20-2, 9-1 BIG EAST)
Seton Hall has won 19 of their last 20 games, including seven straight. The Pirates only loss in BIG EAST play came back on Jan. 2.
Since the last meeting with Creighton, way back on Dec. 3, Seton Hall has lost power forward Bra'Shey Ali to a dismissal.
The loss, however, has not affected the Pirates as Seton Hall is undefeated without Ali. More impressive the Pirates have raised their rebounding total to 46.1 per game over the last seven.
The real focus for Seton Hall is the play of a trio of guards, Daisha Simmons (17.3 ppg), Tabatha Richardson-Smith (17.9 ppg) and Ka-Deidre Simmons (17.3 ppg). The trio combined to average just under 53 points per game, just over 69% of the Pirate offense.
Keys to the Game w/Seton Hall:
- Handling the press: Like St. John's, Seton Hall likes to create offense with its defense. The Pirates, however, are better at it. Seton Hall forces over 18 turnovers per game this season.
- Limit the three-point shot: In the game at D.J. Sokol Arena in December, the Pirates hit 10 treys (10-of-21). This is an area that Creighton struggles, but the Bluejays must defend the trifecta.
- Control the boards: The Bluejays grabbed 18 offensive rebounds in the first meeting. While out rebounding the Pirates by 16 may be difficult on the road, Creighton must place an emphasis on this.
Flanery Earns 2015 Mary Lucretia & Sarah Emily Creighton Award
Women's basketball coach Jim Flanery will be one of three members of the Creighton community honored on Thursday, Feb. 5 for their commitment to the development of women.
Creighton University's Committee on the Status of Women has announced a trio of honorees for this year's Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily Creighton Award.
The 2015 Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily Creighton Award honorees are: Jim Flanery, head coach of the women's basketball team; Meghan Bullard, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences and Diane Cullen, Ph.D., a professor of biomedical sciences.
Janning Claims First BIG EAST Player of the Week Nod of 2015
he reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year and Preseason Player of the Year is starting to hit her stride this season and this weekend's performances were no different.
The junior guard led the Bluejays to back-to-back wins by averaging 22 points, four rebounds, four assists and 3.5 steals, while shooting .519 from the field and .417 from deep.
Playing Crazy 8s
After stopping Butler's eight-game win streak on Sunday, Feb. 1, Creighton may have the chance to repeat the feat at Seton Hall on Sunday, Feb. 8. The Pirates enter the weekend with a seven-game win streak and host Providence on Friady.
Janning Gives Her Best to the Bulldogs
Known as a dog lover, Janning saves her best for those teams with a Bulldog mascot. Over her three seasons Janning has played 12 games against the combination of Butler, Drake and Georgetown.
Against Butler she has topped 20 twice in five meetings. Janning has scored 20+ points in each of the four times she has faced Drake. While against Georgetown she has scored 20+ in two of her three contests, including a career-high 38 last season.
