Baseball Drops BIG EAST Opener at Georgetown, 4-3

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Creighton Baseball team suffered a 4-3 loss in opening game of BIG EAST play at Georgetown on Thursday, April 2.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 15-9 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown moved to 13-12 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Sophomore Daniel Woodrow got the Bluejays out to a quick start as he led off the game with a double to center. Woodrow came around to score two batters later on an RBI ground out from junior Reagan Fowler.
The Bluejays pushed their lead to 2-0 in the second without the benefit of a hit on an error, a hit batter, a walk and a wild pitch.
The score remained 2-0 into the fifth inning, when Bluejay starter Rollie Lacy encountered a bit of trouble after the first two Hoyas were retired. Lacy loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, then Chase Bushor connected for a three-run double down the left field line.
Junior Ryan Fitzgerald got Creigthton even in the eighth with a one-out RBI double down the right field line to bring home junior Brett Murray, but Fitzgerald was stranded at second.
Georgetown responded in the bottom half of the inning with the go-ahead run on three singles and a walk.
In the final frame Georgetown closer, David Ellingson, set Creighton down in order for his fifth save of the season. The win went to Hoyas reliever Simon Matthews (3-3) as he held the Bluejays to one run on three hits in two innings. Creighton's Nick Highberger suffered the loss (3-1), allowing one run on one hit in 2.2 innings of relief.
The Bluejays and Hoyas continue the three-game set on Friday, April 3 at 3:00 pm
