
Baseball Downed By Nebraska, 7-6

OMAHA, Neb. - Despite back-to-back extra base hits in the ninth, the Creighton Baseball team dropped a hard fought 7-6 contest to Nebraska on Tuesday, April 28.
Following the loss Creighton is 24-13 overall, while Nebraska moved to 31-16.
Down 7-5 entering the bottom of the ninth against Nebraska closer Josh Roeder, sophomore Nicky Lopez and junior Reagan Fowler belted a triple and a double to make it 7-6. The Bluejays bunted Fowler to third, but the Huskers brought the infield in and Roeder got a bouncer to short followed by a punch out to end the game.
The Bluejays struck first with three runs in the second. Junior Harrison Crawford bounced a single up the middle to open the frame, then moved to second on a sacrifice. Crawford went to third on a wild pitch, then junior Matt Gandy worked a walk. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a second wild pitch of the inning, then back to back singles from sophomore Kevin Connolly and senior Kevin Lamb made it 2-0. The third Creighton run of the inning came home via a sac fly from sophomore Daniel Woodrow.
Nebraska got two runs back in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth with a run on an RBI single from Ryan Boldt.
Creighton reclaimed the lead with two runs in the sixth. Fitzgerald got a leadoff single to right, then one out later a single from Connolly put runners at the corners. A pass ball chased in Fitzgerald to make it 4-3. After walks to Lamb and Woodrow loaded the bases, Lopez drove in the fifth Bluejay run via an RBI ground out.
The Huskers, however, plated one run in the seventh, two in the eighth and one more in the ninth to build their 7-5 edge.
Nebraska reliever Colton Howell collected the win (2-3) with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Roeder nabbed his 13th save of the year in the ninth.
Creighton freshman Ethan DeCaster took the loss (2-2), allowing two runs on one hit and a walk to the two batters he faced in the eighth.
Offensively the Bluejays got three hits from Fowler and Connolly in the loss.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday, April 29 as the Bluejays battle South Dakota State at 6:00 pm in a neutral site game in Sioux City, Iowa.
