OMAHA, Neb. -- MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Fabian Herbers' goal in the 31st minute proved to be the difference as No. 6 Creighton Men's Soccer defeated Michigan, 1-0, before 4,838 fans at Morrison Stadium on Friday, Aug. 28.
Creighton (1-0-0) is now unbeaten in its last nine openers (7-0-2) and 13-1-6 in its last 20 lid-lifters. Michigan fell to 0-1-0 with the setback.
Creighton scored the game's lone goal in the 31st minute, as Herbers found the back of the net. Herbers corralled a long feed from Fernando Castellanos down the left sideline, headed inward and took two dribbles before firing a shot from the top of the box past the outstretched hand of Michigan goalkeeper Evan Louro. It would be the junior's seventh career game-winning goal.
The Bluejays had a goal from Timo Pitter with 15:41 remaining waved off due to an offsides.
Michigan's best scoring opportunity of the day came with just over six minutes to play, when Connor Sparrow denied Francis Atuahene from eight yards out on a tough angle down the left flank. Sparrow ended the game with seven saves for his 14th career complete game shutout in 27 starts at CU.
Creighton owned a 16-9 lead in shots on the night, including eight on frame. The Bluejays also led in corner kicks, 8-4.
The crowd of 4,838 fans was the largest ever for a Creighton men's soccer season-opener.
