OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 6 Creighton Men's Soccer team scored two goals in each half to post a 4-0 win over visiting Milwaukee before 2,284 fans at Morrison Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Creighton improved to 2-0-0 after opening the season with two shutouts for the fourth time in the last five years, while Horizon League favorite Milwaukee dropped to 1-1-0.
Creighton got on the board less than nine minutes into the game, as Fabian Herbers threaded a pass through the UWM defense to Timo Pitter, who buried it for his first goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, CU goalkeeper Connor Sparrow left his line to stonewall an uncontested shot from Nick Moon. The Milwaukee forward got behind the Bluejay defense for a one-on-one chance, but Sparrow was equal to the challenge. It was the only save of the contest for the senior, who notched his 15th career shutout at Creighton.
The Bluejays doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 29th minute as junior Myles Englis scored his first goal of the season. Englis corralled a 40-yard pass in from defender Mitch LaGro, spun to his right and booted in the score on his first touch with his left foot. It was LaGro's first assist and came just four minutes after the redshirt freshman checked in for his Bluejay debut.
Creighton tacked on two insurance tallies less than five minutes apart in the second half as both Fernando Castellanos and Herbers found the back of the net.
Castellanos' goal came on a feed near the top of the box from Noah Franke in the 64th minute, while Herbers scored on a breakaway a short time later after a misplay by the UWM defense.
Another Panther scoring opportunity came in the second half came in the 56th minute, when Francesco Saporito's free kick avoided a five-man wall and bounced off the crossbar to preserve the Bluejay lead.
Less than 48 hours after Milwaukee scored five times against Evansville, Creighton held the Panthers to four shots overall. Creighton, meanwhile, peppered UWM with 25 shots and forced Agustin Rey to make six saves.
Herbers led the Bluejays with six shots, while a total of 11 Bluejays launched at least one shot. Pitter placed three of his five shot attempts on net to set a Morrison Stadium record with 67 career shots on goal, one more than former Bluejay All-American Ethan Finlay.
Creighton remains at home next weekend, hosting Cal State Northridge on Friday at 7:30 pm as part of the program's fourth annual Socctoberfest.
