Women's Soccer Drops BIG EAST Opener at Marquette, 5-1

Milwaukee, Wis. - Despite an early lead and a strong effort on the road, the Creighton women's soccer team dropped the BIG EAST opener at Marquette, 5-1.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 8-4-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in BIG EAST action, while Marquette improved to 4-4-3 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.
The Bluejays took an early lead in the ninth minute as junior Ylenia Sachau connected on her fifth goal of the season. Sachau fired the goal in on a direct kick from 25 yards away to make it 1-0.
Sachau nearly put the Bluejays up 2-0 on another direct kick, hitting the crossbar on a shot from near midfield in the 37th minute.
Marquette, however, drew even in the 38th minute as Darian Powell converted a set piece for the Golden Eagles. Powell came streaking in from the right side with a head on a direct kick from Jacie Jermier to knot the match at 1-1.
The second half, saw Marquette take a 2-1 edge in the 59th minute, but Sachau did her best to draw even in the 71st minutes. This time it was Sachau making a run on a free kick by senior Jill Richgels as Sachau gathered the ball, but her shot hit the right post.
Down the stretch of the match the Golden Eagles added goals in the 78th, 80th and 85th minutes to put the match away.
"We fought hard today and I am proud of the team effort," said head coach Ross Paule. "The final (5-1) is a harsh score for how well we played. We played well enough to tie or even to win this game."
"We have to put away our clear chances we had and the game changes," added Paule. "We out worked them from box to box but they were better inside the 18 yard boxes. Marquette is very good in the air and scored every goal off set pieces and crosses, we failed to covert our clear chances."
Marquette outshot Creighton 18-9 for the match, including 12-4 in the second half. The Golden Eagels, meahwhile, created 10 corner kicks and held the Bluejays without one.
Creighton is back on the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 1 as the Bluejays host DePaul at 7:00 pm.
