Works, Mellman & Leytem Lead Women's Basketball Past Providence, 72-48

Omaha, Neb. - Lauren Works, Tessa Leytem and Myah Mellman all delivered career-highs to lift the Creighton women's basketball team to a 72-48 win over Providence on Sunday, Jan. 17.
Creighton posted its fourth consecutive victory to move to 10-9 on the season and 4-3 in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence, meanwhile, fell to 4-13 overall and 0-7 in conference action.
With Sydney Lamberty sidelined by an illness, Works made just the fourth start of her career. Starting agreed with Works as she knocked down her first two shots from downtown, scoring six in the opening quarter to push the Bluejays out to a 17-12 advantage.
Providence cut the lead to four with early in the second, 19-15 with 8:36 left, but Creighton responded with nine straight to push its lead to 13 (30-17 with 5:14 remaining). Works got things dialed her game up once more from long range to get the Bluejays started. Following a layup by sophomore Bailey Norby, Works drove the lane for two more. Junior MC McGrory capped the run on a mid-range jumper. Providence closed the half on a 7-1 run to send the game to the break with the Bluejays up 31-24.
The second half was time for Mellman and Leytem to shine. The duo combined for 19 points in the third and fourth quarters, led by 12 from Leytem. Early in the third period the Friars made one final push, getting within nine (37-28). Creighton, however, responded with a 14-2 run (51-30) to put the game away. Six different Bluejays contributed to the run, keyed by treys from Mellman and Leytem.
While Mellman, Leytem and Works carried the scoring load, the Bluejays got an emotional lift from the return of junior Brianna Rollerson. After missing the last 16 games with a Jones fracture to her right foot, Rollerson returned to floor for 11 minutes on Sunday.
Works led all scorers with 19 points, while Mellman and Leytem each finished with 14 points. Sarah Beal led the Friars with 11 points.
The Bluejays will return to the court on Friday, Jan. 22 as Creighton travels to Chicago to face DePaul at 7:00 pm.
