Women's Hoops Drops Tough Battle in Milwaukee, 79-72

Milwaukee, Wis. - The Creighton women's basketball team suffered a hard fough 79-72 loss to Marquette on Sunday, Jan. 24.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 10-11 on the season and 4-5 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette moved to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in conference action.
A wild first quarter saw the Bluejays jump out to a quick 5-0 lead on a driving layup from sophomore Jade Owens and a trey by sophomore Sydney Lamberty. Marquette responded with an 18-0 run to seemingly take control with 3:56 left in the opening period. Down 20-7 moments later it was the Bluejays turn. Creighton rattled off 16 straight points to reclaim the lead 23-20 with 6:45 showing in the second quarter. Six different Bluejays scored during the run, ignited by a driving layup from Owens. Junior Brianna Rollerson followed with two free throws. From that point the Bluejays "Let It Fly" as Lauren Works, MC McGrory, Olivia Elger and Tessa Leytem each connected from long range in succession. The final six minutes of the second quarter saw Creighton dictate the pace of play much more as the Bluejays took a 34-32 edge into the locker room at halftime.
Early in the second half the Bluejays pushed their lead to a game-high of seven (41-34) behind a three-ball from McGrory with 8:46 left. Marquette responded with five straight to get within a bucket and went on to take the lead at 47-45 with just under three minutes left in the third. The Golden Eagles did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
McGrory led the Bluejays with 18 points, while Works finished with 14. Marquette got 21 points from Allazia Blockton and 17 from Natisha Hiedeman.
The Bluejays are back in action on Friday, Jan. 29 as Creighton hosts Villanova on Fos Sports 1 at 7:00 pm in D.J. Sokol Arena.
