Bluejay WBB Open Second Half of BIG EAST Play With 53-48 Win Over Villanova

Omaha, Neb. - Led by 12 points from sophomore Bailey Norby and junior Lauren Works, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Villanova 53-48 on Friday, Jan. 29.
The win evened the Bluejays record at 11-11 and 5-5 in BIG EAST action, while Villanova fell to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in BIG EAST play.
After opening the game 1-for-15 from the field, the Bluejays found themselves down just 11-4 in the opening moments of the second quarter. Back-to-back treys from Works and sophomore Myah Mellman sent Creighton on an 11-3 run to claim their first lead of the game at 15-14 with 5:56 left in the first half. Following Mellman's trey, Villanova's Caroline Coyer knocked down a trifecta of her own. Norby responded with the next five points of the game, capped by a traditional three point play. The Wildcats recovered to take a 21-19 lead in at the half.
The first few minutes of the third quarter was a back-and-forth battle but a six point burst by Villanova gave the Wildcats a 34-27 lead with 3:42 showing on the clock. Creighton head coach Jim Flanery called a timeout and made an adjustment in the lineup to go small. Junior Sydney Lamberty slid to the center position and the Bluejays took off. Lamberty drove the lane late in the shot clock for a layup with 2:01 left, the bucket started a 10-0 Bluejay run to close the quarter. Following a Wildcat turnover Works knocked down a three-ball from the corner. The next Bluejay possession saw Works drive the lane for two as she was fouled. The ensuing free throw gave Creighton the lead. Lamberty closed the quarter with another driving layup in the final two seconds to put Creighton up 37-34 heading to the fourth quarter.
Villanova opened the final period with two free throws by Coyer, but it didn't even slow down the Bluejays. Mellman and Works responded with back-to-back treys as Creighton opened up a 42-36 edge (7:36). Coyer countered with a jumper from the wing, but a Norby knocked down her second three-point shot of the season, followed by buckets from junior MC McGrory and Lamberty to push the Bluejay lead to 49-38 (3:56).
The Wildcats charged back in the closing moments, getting within one point at 49-48 with 23 seconds left on the clock. Creighton, however, got four clutch free throws from McGrory and Lamberty down the stretch to secure the win.
Work and Norby's 12 point efforts led the way for Creighton, while McGrory finished with 10. Coyer finished with a game-high 15 points for Villanova. While the night starterd off cold for the Bluejays, Creighton hit 17 of its final 35 shots (49%) to finish the night 18-of-50 (36.0%).
Creighton returns to the court on Sunday, Jan. 31 as the Bluejays battle Georgetown at 1:00 pm.
