Omaha, Neb. - The Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 57-44 defeat to Georgetown on Sunday, Jan. 31.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 11-12 on the season and 5-6 in BIG EAST play, while the Hoyas moved to 12-9 overall and 5-6 in conference action.
A sluggish first few minutes by the Bluejays gave Georgetown a 12-2 edge (6:47). Freshman Audrey Faber got her team turned in the right direction with a three pointer from the wing with 5:53 showing, but Georgetown freshman Dionna White responded with a teardrop jumper from the elbow to make it 14-5. Faber's bucket had given the Bluejays a renewed energy as Creighton scored the next ten points to seize a 15-14 edge. Sophomore Sydney Lamberty capped the burst with the final four points on two free throws and a driving layup. Scoreless for better than five minutes, the Hoyas delivered the final bucket of the opening quarter to take a 16-15 lead.
The two teams traded buckets throughout the first five minutes of quarter number two. Trailing 23-20 with 4:09 left in the first half, Creighton found themselves on the wrong side of a 10-0 run by the Hoyas to close the quarter as the Bluejays trailed 33-20 at halftime.
Down by 15 (45-30) with just over three minutes left in the third the Bluejays clawed back into the game with six straight on a mid-range jumper from junior MC McGrory followed by four free throws from McGrory and Lamberty to cut the deficit to single digits at 45-36 head to the final period.
The Bluejays got as close as five points at 47-42 (6:47) and again at 49-44 (2:37) but were unable to climb all the way back.
Creighton closed the contest just 15-of-59 from the field (25.4%).
Lamberty and McGrory led the Bluejays with 14 and 12 respectively, while Georgetown got 12 form Dominique Vitalis.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, Feb. 6 as the Bluejays face Butler in Indianapolis at 10:30 am.
