Brookings, S.D. -- Despite a furious fourth quarter rally, the Creighton Women's basketball squad dropped its season-opener at South Dakota State, 63-56, on Friday, Nov. 11.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 0-1 on the season, while SDSU went to 1-0.
Shooting just 28% (13-of-46) in the opening three periods, Creighton went into the final period down 48-32. The Bluejays got warmed up in the final 10 minutes, shooting 9-of-15 (60%) to pull within five at 56-51 with just 2:31 left on the clock. However, coming out of a Creighton timeout South Dakota State proved equal to the challenge by forcing the Bluejays into turnovers on consecutive possessions to pull away down the stretch.
The Jackrabbits came out aggressive as South Dakota State raced out to a 8-0 in the opening three minutes. Creighton rallied behind its defense as the Bluejays turned four SDSU turnovers into a 9-2 run to make it a 10-9 contest. South Dakota State closed the opening period with back-to-back buckets for a 14-9 edge at the end of the first quarter.
Neither team could gain any ground on the other in the second period. Sophomore Audrey Faber delivered a layup to open the frame to bring Creighton within three, but South Dakota State answered on the following possession. That pattern continued for the next five minutes as the teams matched one another. Following a three-pointer from SDSU's Madison Guebert, Bluejay senior Marissa Janning knocked down a trey for the Bluejays to make it 23-20 (5:16). The Jackrabbits scored the next four points of the game to surge out 27-20 and led 30-22 with just over one minute remaining in the half. Faber closed the period as she had opened it, gliding by a defender for a layup to send Creighton to halftime down 30-24.
The third period began just as the game had, with South Dakota State using an 8-0 run to bounce out to a 38-24 advantage and went on to build the 48-32 edge.
Faber led the Bluejays with 12 points in the contest, while McGrory finished with 10 points. Redshirt freshman Jaylyn Agnew was impressive in her first action as a Bluejay, posting four points, six rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.
The Bluejays return to action on Sunday, Nov. 13 as Creighton travels to Kansas to battle Wichita State at 2:00 pm.
