Back-to-Back-to-Back! Volleyball Clinches Third Straight Outright Title With Sweep of Providence

Bluejays win 16th straight match
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Volleyball team won its 16th straight match and clinched its third straight outright BIG EAST Conference regular-season title with a 3-0 sweep of Providence on Saturday night. The victory made CU the first team to win three straight outright BIG EAST titles since Notre Dame from 1999-2002.
Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-22, 25-13.
Creighton (22-6, 16-0 BIG EAST) extended the best single-season start in league history with its sixth straight sweep, the longest streak in program history. Providence fell to 13-19 on the year, and is 1-15 in BIG EAST action.
Both teams came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, as PC hit .375 and Creighton an even loftier .464. The score was tied at 9-all until Creighton unleashed a 6-2 run after a timeout. Taryn Kloth had five kills in the frame, a 25-18 Bluejay victory.
Providence led 18-16 in the second set before Creighton went to work. Amanda Foje entered the match and served a 3-0 run, including an ace. After the teams traded sideouts Megan Ballenger served up four more points as the Bluejay lead grew to 23-19. Lauren Smith had a solo stuff of Abigail Dix on set point to seal the 25-22 win and give the Jays a 2-0 lead at the intermission. Jaali Winters had six kills and seven digs in the second set alone to help will her team to victory.
Brittany Witt served Creighton to a 4-0 lead in the final set and Creighton never looked back. Smith would push the lead to 12-6 after a six-point service run of her own, and a kill from Kloth closed out the sweep. Creighton hit .500 in the final set, with 15 kills in 28 swings.
Winters led all Bluejays with 12 kills and eight digs, hitting .435 in 23 swings. Marysa Wilkinson hit .471 with eight kills, while Smith finished with eight kills, four blocks and a .375 hitting percentage. Creighton had six different women produce at least one ace, including two from Ballenger. Creighton finished with 45 kills, seven aces, 38 digs and nine blocks on .372 hitting.
Providence was led by nine kills by Jenae Alderson, and Michelle Cruz added nine digs to her league-leading total. The Friars hit .204 and finished with 34 kills, two aces, 33 digs and one block.
Creighton concludes the regular-season next weekend with two more home matches at D.J. Sokol Arena. Georgetown comes to town for a 7 pm match on Friday before a contest against Villanova on Sunday at 1 pm. Both contests will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
