Bluejays set Paradise Jam scoring record with most points since 1985
ST. THOMAS, USVI - No. 22 Creighton was too much for North Carolina State as the Bluejays rolled to a 112-94 win on Sunday night at the Paradise Jam. The 112 points were a Paradise Jam single-game record for a team, fifth-most in program history, and the most by a Bluejay unit since 1985.
With the victory, Creighton will play Ole Miss for the Paradise Jam title on Monday night at 7:30 pm Central in a game televised by CBS Sports Network.
Creighton put seven men in double-figures, led by 20 points from Cole Huff, who paced the team in scoring for a second straight night. Huff scored 14 points in the first half, then added a four-point play during a 8-0 run that saw the Bluejays extend the lead to 62-50 in the first 95 seconds of the second half.
NC State never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Bluejays shook the Wolfpack for good midway through the second half, using an 11-0 burst as the lead bulged to 18. Veteran big men Toby Hegner and Zach Hanson combined for nine of the 11 points in the flurry.
CU cracked the 100 point barrier for the second straight game with 6:06 to play on the second of consecutive three-pointers by Isaiah Zierden, then etched its name in the Paradise Jam record book with 2:59 to play on a Khyri Thomas basket to make it 107-86. It's just the third time in school history that Creighton has scored in triple-digits in consecutive games.
Creighton eventually led by as much as 24 points over NC State, which has been discussed as a sleeper Sweet 16 team in some preseason publications.
The Bluejays shot 60.6 percent from the field and hit 13-of-27 three-point shots. CU was also 19-of-24 at the line, owned the glass 39-28 and had 21 assists against just 10 turnovers. CU scored 52 points in the paint and outscored the Woflpack bench 38-12.
In addition to his team-high 20 points, Huff also hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double. Thomas had 16 points, Marcus Foster added 15 and Maurice Watson Jr. had 13 points and seven assists despite early foul trouble. Zierden sank 4-of-4 three-pointers to score 12 points, while Zach Hanson finished with 11. Justin Patton finished with 10 points, including four dunks.
NC State was paced by 28 points from Terry Henderson, who finished with seven three-pointers. Hyped freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. added 21 points and seven assists, while Torin Dorn finished with 16 points. NC State shot 45.6 percent from the field and made 14-of-28 three-point tries.
