OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team defeated Georgetown 3-0 on Thursday night at Morrison Stadium. Ricky Lopez-Espin scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season to guide the Bluejays into the First Round of the BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep.Â
With the victory, Creighton secured the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5-seed Xavier on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
No. 24 Creighton improved to 9-5-3 overall and ended the BIG EAST regular-season slate at 5-3-1, while Georgetown closed its season at 6-9-2 and 3-4-2 in conference action.Â
After being held scoreless on Saturday against Providence, the Bluejays broke into the scoring column during the 20th minute on Thursday. Joel Rydstrand sent a corner kick into the box where Peter Prescott headed the ball towards the front of the goal. Lopez-Espin recovered Prescott's deflection and one-touched the ball into the back of the net to give Creighton its first goal since the 52nd minute against Xavier on Oct. 26 (also scored by Lopez-Espin).
Less than five minutes later, Riggs Lennon converted his team-leading 10th goal on a penalty kick during the 24th minute. Lennon drew a foul just inside the 18-yard box to set up his third penalty kick opportunity of the season.Â
The Bluejays added their third goal of the match during the 67th minute. Lennon sent a pass towards Lopez-Espin outside the 18-yard box where the junior dribbled the ball towards the center of the top of the box and fired a shot past Georgetown's goalkeeper for his second goal of the match.
Creighton held a slight 15-14 advantage in shots, while the Hoyas held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Alex Kapp tallied four saves for his BIG EAST-leading seventh shutout of the season.
Thursday's three-goal outburst marked the Bluejays sixth match with three or more goals, but first since Sept. 27 against No. 12 Loyola-Chicago. The victory also snapped Creighton's three-match losing streak.Â
The Bluejays will face Xavier in the second of two First Round matchups on Sunday afternoon. Third-seeded Villanova will host sixth-seeded DePaul at noon.
