South Orange, N.J. -- Down as much as 17 in the second quarter, the Creighton women's basketball team got within one late in the fourth before falling to Seton Hall 77-71 on Friday, Feb. 26.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 13-16 on the season and 7-10 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall moved to 21-7 overall and 11-6 in conference action.
Trailing 40-28 coming out of the locker room Creighton got a lift by flipping the script on the Pirates as post player Bailey Norby became a three-point specialist and Jade Owens went to work on the boards. A combined 2-for-8 from downtown in her career, Norby openerd the second half with a trey from the top of the key and went on to knock down all three from downtown. Owens, meanwhile, led the Bluejays in rebounding for the 11th time this season with six boards.
Norby's efforts energized the Bluejays, but the comeback began in earnest early in the final period. Down 67-56 with 8:54 remaining Owens delivered a driving layup to kick off a 10-0 Bluejay run. Following a defensive stand, Norby knocked down her third three-ball of the game. Moments later junior MC McGrory earned an and-1 chance, scoring on a driving layup. The Minnesota native missed the free throw, but the rebound bounced out to the Bluejays and junior Lauren Works made it a one-point game with a trifecta from the left corner with 4:39 on the clock.
One more defensive stop gave Creighton a chance to take the lead, but the Bluejays were unable to convert. Seton Hall used the stop to propel the Pirates to the next five points to salt away the game with a 72-66 lead with under a minute to play.
The first half followed a similar storyline as the Bluejays found themselves down 7-0 after just 92 seconds. Creighton head coach Jim Flanery used an early timeout to calm his Bluejays. His words found their mark as Creighton responded with a 10-0 run to claim the lead. McGrory got things started from the right wing by draining a trey. Following a Pirate turnover junior Baily Norby found her range from 12-feet. The next possession yielded a trey by sophomore Sydney Lamberty and junior Brianna Rollerson capped the run on a give-and-go with Lamberty. Before the quarter ended the two teams exchanged mini runs, sending the contest to the second period tied at 15-15.
Lamberty opened the second with another trey, her third of the game. Creighton held the edge through the first two minutes, but an 18-0 Seton Hall run gave the Pirates a 39-22 edge with 1:32 remaining. The Bluejays outscored Seton Hall 6-1 to close the period, aided by a coast-to-coast layup from Owens in the final 3.8 seconds to send the contest to half.
McGrory led Creighton with 20 points, while Lamberty and Norby also finished in double figure with 14 and 11 respectively. Seton Hall got a game-high 22 points from Tabitha Richardson-Smith and 13 from Tiffany Jones.
