Queens, N.Y. -- Powered by 18 points from sophomore Sydney Lamberty and a strong defensive effort, the Creighton women's basketball team upset St. John's 64-57 on the final day of the regular season.
Down 44-43 opening the fourth quarter, the Bluejays put their stamp on the final period early with the first five points. Sophomore Jade Owens gave Creighton the lead (44-43), then Lamberty knocked down her second trey to put the Bluejays up 48-44 (9:33). After a St. John's traditional three-point play, Lamberty calmly drained another trifecta. Red Storm senior Aliyyah Handford tried to rally her troops with a driving layup, but Lamberty knocked down her fourth trey of the game to push the Bluejay lead to its largest margin (54-49) with 5:45 left.
Fighting to give their seniors one final victory in Carnesecca Arena, the Red Storm got within three on a pull-up jumper from juniors Jade Walker. Creighton junior MC McGrory answered with a bank shot from the left side, only to see Aliyyah Lewis cut the Creighton lead to 56-53 with 3:47 left. Once more the Bluejays turned to their captain, McGrory. The Minnesota native delivered once more with a traditional three-point play. The Bluejays pushed their lead to 61-53 moments later as Lamberty knocked down two from the charity stripe.
Back-to-back buckets from Handford gave the Red Storm on last gasp, but the Bluejays salted the game away from the free-throw line
A sluggish start for both teams yielded a 6-0 deficit in the opening moments (7:25). Freshman Audrey Faber broke the seal for the Bluejays with a three-ball (6:11) to get Creighton started, but the Bluejays trailed 10-5 with 3:35 left in the first quarter. Junior Brianna Rollerson got an interior bucket on Creighton's next possession to ignite a 7-0 Creighton rally. Following a block by Faber, junior Lauren Works tied the game at 10-10 (2:50) and the Bluejays claimed their first lead of the game moments later on a driving layup by Lamberty. Works knocked down another trey before the period came to a close but it was the Red Storm owning a 16-15 edge after one.
St. John's pushed their lead back to five in the opening moments of the second period, 20-15. Creighton answered with an 8-2 burst on four points from Owens, a three-ball by Faber and a free throw from Works. St. John's closed the quarter with the final run as the Red Storm took a 32-27 lead into the half.
The third quarter followed the pattern set in the opening two periods with the two teams trading runs as the Bluejays got within a bucket, 36-34 (6:32), only to see St. John's push back out to a six-point lead at 40-34 (4:00). Creighton came right back with a trey by Lamberty and a Rollerson layup to make it a one-point game at 40-39 (2:42). The margin stayed at one-point though the entire of the third, setting up the exciting finish.
Lamberty led the Bluejays with 18 points in the contest, while Faber finished with 14 and Owens contributed 12 points. Handford led all scorers with 19 points in the loss.
The Bluejays secured the No. 7 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament with the win. Creighton will face No. 10 Providence on Saturday, March 5 at 2:30 pm in the opening game of the conference tourney.
