Bluejay WBB Advances to BIG EAST Quarterfinals with 70-53 Win

Chicago, Ill. -- Powered by a 15-0 run to open the game and another 14-2 run to open the final frame, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated No. 10 Providence in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday, March 5.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 15-16 overall and advanced to face No. 2 Villanova on Sunday at noon. Providence closed its season at 5-24.
The opening seven minutes of play saw Creighton hold Providence scoreless as the Bluejays built a 15-0 edge. Five different players contributed to the run, led by four points from both sophomore Sydney Lamberty and freshman Audrey Faber. The Bluejays went on to hold a 21-7 advantage after one period.
Providence continued to claw back into the contest throughout the second period of play, hitting a trifecta in the closing moments to send both teams into halftime with Creighton holding a slim 33-28 lead.
Creighton saw its lead trimmed to as little as two (40-38) with just over five minutes remaining. With the game on the line, Faber stepped up. The Iowa native drove the ball to the hoop for a layup, then answered a Providence layup with a 10-footer to make it 44-40. The Bluejays shut down Providence on the defensive end, allowing Faber to swoop in for the rebound. On the offensive end Faber knocked down a trey for her seventh straight Creighton point to push the Bluejay lead to 47-40 with 2:43 left in the third period.
Back out to a comfortable lead, 52-43 entering the fourth, the Bluejays scored 14 of the first 16 points in the final period to put the game away with a 66-45 edge (7:17).
Faber led all scorers with 16 points, while junior MC McGrory closed the game with 15. Sophomore Jade Owns also reached double-figures with 13 points and led the Bluejays with seven assists.
Providence's Clara Che led the Friars with 14 points in the loss.
