Bluejays never trail while snapping three-game skid
OMAHA, Neb. -- Cole Huff scored 18 points in the final 5:14 of the first half and a season-high 28 overall to lead Creighton to an 88-66 win over DePaul on Saturday afternoon before 17,139 fans at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
Creighton improved to 15-9 on the year and upped its BIG EAST record to 6-5. DePaul, coming off a win over No. 11 Providence on Tuesday, fell to 8-15 and is 2-9 in league play.
Creighton was leading 21-17 before embarking on a 12-0 run to bury the Blue Demons. The spurt started with two foul shots from Isaiah Zierden before Huff took matters into his own hands and scored the next 10 points. It started with a four-point play, continued with a turnaround jumper in the lane, and he followed that up with a steal and breakaway dunk. Huff later added a pair of three-pointers in the final 90 seconds of the half, including one from the right corner to give Creighton a 43-27 halftime lead.
Creighton quickly opened up a 47-27 lead in the second half, only to see DePaul use a 12-2 run to mount a comeback and halve the gap. But Huff would again heat up, as the lead returned to 18 midway through the half and Creighton cruised down the stretch. The Bluejays led by as much as 28 (88-60) before allowing the game's last six points for the final margin.
Huff drained 9-of-11 field goals and added three steals while finishing with a season-high 28 points. The total was three shy of his collegiate high, set in 2014 while he played at the University of Nevada. Geoffrey Groselle added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while James Milliken and Maurice Watson Jr. each added a dozen points. Watson also added a game-high nine assists, his 15th straight game leading the Bluejays in that category.
Creighton shot 51.7 percent from the field (30-58), including 39.1 percent from downtown (9-23). The Bluejays also drained 19-of-23 free throws, good for 82.6 percent at the charity stripe. Creighton outrebounded a bigger DePaul line-up 43-25 for the contest, and the Bluejay bench outscored DePaul's, 51-28.
DePaul was paced by 22 points and eight rebounds from Myke Henry, while Eli Cain and Darrick Wood each scored 12 points. Billy Garrett Jr. was held scoreless in 17 minutes of playing time, just the second time in his career he's been held scoreless (both vs. CU). DePaul shot 45.6 percent overall (26-57), and were 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from downtown. DePaul also made 11-of-18 free throw attempts.
Creighton returns to the court on Tuesday at 7:05 pm when it hosts No. 6 Xavier.
