Michal Hylton earns the win with her first career complete game
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Michal Hylton threw her first career complete game as the Creighton Softball team picked up its fourth win in 36 hours with a 3-1 victory over Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
Creighton improved to 10-8 with its fifth straight win, overcoming a 1-0 deficit after one inning against Holy Cross (0-6). CU had blanked Akron, 1-0, in eight innings earlier in the day behind a dominating one-hit complete game effort from Sydnee Eck.
Hylton needed just 99 pitches to author the first complete game of her young career. She allowed three hits, one run, one walk and struck out six while improving to 2-1.
Head coach Brent Vigness was pleased with the work of his freshman hurler. "She really worked herself out of a jam in the first inning. The first two kids got on base to open the game, but she settled in, kept them off balance and stayed composed. It was good to see her be able to go deeper into a game than she has this year. That's important for her and important for our team as the year goes on."
After the Crusaders scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first, Creighton answered with all the offense it would need in the top of the second. Tash Coffiel singled with two outs to move pinch-runner Erin McGonigal to second. Both women would come around to score on Kelsey Allender's two-run triple.
The Jays added some insurance in the top of the sixth inning when Coffiel walked with the bases loaded to plate pinch-runner Sam Crowley.
Vigness also highlighted the play of Michelle Trulin, who went 2-for-4 at the plate. "Michelle had a good day offensively. with four hits. She's one of our speed kids, so to get her on base is beneficial."
Katy Watson (0-3) was tagged with the loss for Holy Cross after allowing eight hits and three runs in five frames.
The Bluejays will take Monday off before another doubleheader on Tuesday, when they face South Dakota State at 8 am and Hampton at 10:15 am Central.
