Jen Daro homers to lead the offense
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Micaela Whitney struck out a career-high 13 batters as Creighton Softball threw its second shutout of the day in a 7-0 win over Hampton.
Creighton improved to 13-9 with the win, its third straight. The Bluejays had gotten a 13-strikeout performance earlier in the day on Wednesday in a 1-hit shutout by Sydnee Eck.
Whitney (2-4) stranded 11 Pirate runners in the shutout, pitching around five hits, two walks and a hit batsmen. She threw 124 pitches in the shutout, her first of the season.
CU got all the offense it would need in just two innings.
Creighton scored four unearned tallies during a five-run third inning. Kelsey Allender tripled and scored on an RBI groundout from Michelle Trulin for the game's first run. Jen Daro broke open the game with a three-run homer to make it 4-0. It was her fifth round-tripper of the season. The Jays would add a fifth run against Jada Fields (2-4) when Jessica Lewis singled, stole second and scored on a Tash Coffiel single.
CU would dent the scoreboard twice in the fourth frame. Anna O'Gorman's sacrifice fly scored Trulin to make it 6-0, and pinch-hitter Mileah McKelvy would single home Allie Reinhart for the game's final run.
Creighton will close a stretch of 10 games in six days at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday when it meets South Dakota State at 8 am and Drexel at 10:15 am Central.
