Aberdeen, Md. -- Down 5-3 entering the ninth, the Creighton Baseball team tried to repeat its final inning magic but came up just short as the Bluejays fell to Xavier on Friday, May 27.
The loss moved the Bluejays (37-16) into an elimination game on Saturday, May 28 against the No. 4 seed St. John's at 2:00 pm (CT). Xavier (29-29), meanwhile, will await the winner of Saturday's contest in the championship on Sunday.
Xavier struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. The Musketeers did all their damage with two men down as Joe Gellenbeck reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error. A passed ball moved Gellenbeck to third and he scored on an RBI single from Nate Soria.
Creighton pulled even in the third with the speed of junior Daniel Woodrow. The center fielder was hit by a pitch to open the inning, stole second with two down and scored on an RBI single from senior Matt Gandy.
After a rocky first inning, Bluejay starter Jeff Albrecht seemed to settle into a grove as he struck out the side in the third. Xavier, however, got to Albrecht with two down in the fourth. The Musketeers loaded the bases on consecutive singles and a walk, then got a three-run double from Daniel Rizzie to make it 4-1. Gellenbeck ended Albrecht's day with an RBI single to center to give Xavier a 5-1 edge.
Junior Kevin Connolly moved the Bluejays within striking distance in the sixth, smacking a two-run triple to left-center with two down. Gandy got things started with a single to center, then senior Harrison Crawford walked to put runners at first and second. Two outs later, Connolly blasted a 2-1 pitch to left-center to make it a 5-3 contest.
Neither team would score again as Xavier starter Trent Astle moved to 5-4 on the season, limiting Creighton to three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings. Musketeer closer Garrett Schilling picked up his 12th save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Albrecht suffered the loss (7-1) for Creighton, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks).
