IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Creighton women's cross country team placed second, and the men fifth, at the season-opening Hawkeye Invitational on Friday night in Iowa City, Iowa.
Iowa won the seven-team women's race with a team score of 47, with Creighton second with 79 points. CU finished ahead of former MVC rivals Illinois State, Bradley and Drake, as well as Iowa State and Missouri.
Emily Martin paced the women with a fourth-place finish, wrapping up the 3K course in 10:24.2. Also in the top-10 was sophomore Lauren Ogg, who completed the Ashton Cross Country Course in 10:31.5. Megan Paule (13t place, 10:35.6) and Vanessa Miller (15th place, 10:37.9), also ran with the lead pack. Rounding out the group that contributed to Creighton's team score was junior Grace Mimmack (37th, 10:59.8). Eleven different women competed for CU overall in the 83-woman race.
"Our women raced well," said head coach Matt Rogers. "They are strong right now and will recover well from the travel and meet. We are in a good place right now."

The men's squad finished in fifth place of nine squads with a team score of 143. Perennial power Iowa State won the race with a team score of 31. Among the teams that CU finished ahead of were Missouri, Northern Iowa, Drake and Bradley.
Garrett Kenyon's return to competition as a Bluejay was a success, as the fifth-year senior finished third in a field of 90 with a time of 17:59.9. That was just 2.3 seconds behind Iowa State's Toby Hardwick, and 0.4 seconds behind second-place Reed Fischer.
Eric Klein was Creighton's second-best finisher, placing 12th in the 6K race with a time of 18:35.3. Also scoring for CU were Jacob Ohnstad (44th, 19:05.5), Patrick Reinschmidt (48th, 19:15.6) and Ty Medd (70th, 19:43.8).
"It was great to have Garrett back out there point scoring for us this year again," noted Rogers. "Our 2, 3, 4, and 5 spots were filled by upper classmen, while our talented group of freshmen men were right behind them ready to fill in."
Creighton returns to the course on Sept. 17 at the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The women's race will begin at 9 am Central, followed an hour later by the men's race.
