NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. -- The Creighton men's and women's cross country teams both earned second place finishes at the Briar Cliff XC Invite on Saturday morning in North Sioux City, S.D. The Bluejays were late entrants to the race, pivoting to the event on just a few days notice after the SDSU Classic scheduled for last night in Brookings was cancelled earlier in the week.
"Pretty solid performances across the board today and good team results," said Creighton head coach Chris Gannon. "I'm glad we were able to get a competition in, when we didn't know if that was going to happen."
Oliver Annus led Creighton in his first race as a Bluejay, placing fifth in a time of 25:21.60 over the 8K course. Freshman Owen Marett, who paced CU in his first two outings, was one spot back in sixth, crossing the finish line in 25:43.95. That was .04 ahead of senior teammate Eli Moore (25:43.99), who was seventh.
Senior Cole Haith was 12th in 25:56.71, with Andrew Sauer 14th after clocking a time of 26:03.33.
The Bluejay men finished with 39 points, trailing only South Dakota's 25, in the field of nine teams. South Dakota's Isaac Ochoa won the men's race of 149 competitors in 24:37.76.
"Our men's crew saw some good improvement and getting Oliver into his first race for us made a huge impact," added Gannon. "It was good to see the young guys execute their second 8K."
The Creighton women also finished in second place with 42 points, with South Dakota winning the seven-team race with 25 points.
Taylor Rorick continued the excellent start to her junior season, finishing a personal-best second in 21:29.37. That was 14 seconds behind South Dakota's Geneva Timmerman, who won the 111-person race in 21:15.85. Rorick has now finished in the top 10 in all three races this fall.
Freshmen Reyna Heisserer (21:42.35) and Atlee Wallman (21:47.56) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to give CU three runners in the top five for the first time in a race with more than two teams since 2008.
Katherine Soule finished 12th in 22:34.72, and the Bluejay scoring contingent was rounded out by Anika Nettekoven in 19th place at 22:51.36.
"The ladies ran well, especially in that top group, and our freshmen handled their first 6K well," noted Gannon. "We need to get fully healthy with a few ladies who didn't run today."
Creighton is back in action on Oct. 17 at the Platte River Rumble "Collegiate", which starts at 1 p.m. at Olsson Cross Country Course in Ashland, Neb. Parking passes, which are required to attend the race inside Mahoney State Park, can be purchased at https://apps.omahasports.org/upcoming-events?EV=323.
