Women's Soccer Looks to Bounce Back at Villanova
9/30/2016 1:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Omaha, Neb. -- Coming off a 4-2 defeat at DePaul, the Creighton women's soccer team will attempt to rebound at Villanova on Sunday.
Series History: Villanova leads series, 2-1-0
The Wildcats took the first two meetings between the two squads by 2-0 scores, but the Bluejays took the contest last year 3-1. Villanova won the lone match in the series played in Villanvoa, on Oct. 17, 2012.
Scouting Villanova (2-8-0, 0-1-0 BIG EAST)
After a season opening win over Delaware, the Wildcats have dropped eight of nine, but Villanova's record is slightly deceiving as the Wildcats battled both No. 8 North Carolina and No. 24 Minnesota in the non-conference portion of its schedule. The more telling stat of the Wildcats season thus far is that Villanova has scored in just three matches, winning two of those. In seven of the Wildcats' eight losses they have suffered a shutout. The other three matches have seen the Wildcats post at three goals in both victories and two in a loss at Saint Joseph's (Sept. 9). Villanova's last goal, however, came on Sept. 15.
Freshmen Kristin Barbour and Ida DiClemente lead the Villanova offense this season. Barbour has a team high nine points on four goals and one assist, while DiClemente has scored three goals and an assist for seven points. Junior Emily Harris has been in goal for Villanova over the last three contests. posting a 2.38 goal against average.
Bounce Back Critical for Bluejays Hopes to Make BIG EAST Tournament
Having missed its conference tournament for the past three season, head coach Ross Paule and the Bluejays are on a mission to end that streak in 2016. After taking the opener from the Golden Eagles, Creighton fell at DePaul. Paule and the Bluejays understand that one of the keys to making the postseason is earning points on the road, making the battle with Villanova critical.
Sullivan's Goal Streak Continues
Over the past five matches Creighton senior Lauren Sullivan has scored at least one goal in each contest. Sullivan notched one goal at DePaul on Thursday, which followed consecutive matches with two goals (at Yale & vs. Marquette). The streak she is currently on is the longest of her Bluejay career. The streak has elevated Sullivan to 18th in the NCAA with eight goals this season.
