Fast Start Leads Men's Basketball Past DePaul During Annual Pink Out

Creighton races to 15-2 lead and never trails
OMAHA, Neb. -- No. 16 Creighton raced to a 15-2 lead in the first seven minutes and never looked back in an 83-66 win over visiting DePaul on Saturday in the program's seventh annual Pink Out. The wire-to-wire victory snapped a two-game losing skid for the Bluejays, who improved to 19-3 (6-3 BIG EAST) at the midway point of league play.
Khyri Thomas had 18 points, seven rebounds and a season-high six assists to lead four Bluejays in double-figures. Marcus Foster had 15 points and a season-best five assists, while Justin Patton (14 points) and Cole Huff (12 points) also pitched in to support CU's balanced effort. Creighton shot 55.8 percent for the game, and owned a 36-20 advantage in the paint, a 17-4 fast break edge and a 20-12 lead in bench points.
Billy Garrett Jr. (15.0 ppg.) added 18 points to top DePaul (8-13, 1-7 BIG EAST), as Eli Cain (17.1 ppg.) finished with nine points on 4-for-17 shooting. Both men, along with Tre'Darius Mccallum (10.1 ppg.), picked up three fouls in the first 17 minutes as the Bluejays took a 44-29 lead into intermission.
DePaul used an 8-2 run to start the second half to drop its deficit to nine (46-37) with 17:02 to play, but would get no closer.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Central when it visits No. 11 Butler.
NOTES: Davion Mintz made his first career start for Creighton and finished with four points, two assists and one rebound in 14 minutes of work. He is the first Creighton freshman to start at point guard since Isacc Miles vs. No. 11 Southern Illinois on March 4, 2007, in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament final ... Justin Patton has scored 10 or more points in 12 straight games, Creighton's longest streak by a freshman since Rodney Buford (17) in 1996 ... Creighton's crowd of 17,611 was the program's sixth straight sellout ... Today marked Creighton's seventh wire-to-wire win this season ... Tyler Clement played a season-high 23 minutes and tied his career-highs with five assists and three points.
