Jays never trail as four men score in double-figures
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The No. 10 Creighton men's basketball team never trailed and improved to 15-1 with a 78-64 win at Providence on Saturday. The victory was Creighton's first in four tries at the Dunkin' Donuts Center since joining the BIG EAST.
On an afternoon that saw a blizzard coat the Northeast part of the country, it was Creighton (15-1, 3-1 BIG EAST) that stormed out of the gates quickly. A three-pointer from Cole Huff preceded hoops from Marcus Foster and Justin Patton as Creighton blitzed to a 7-0 lead for the second straight game. The margin reached double-figures for the first time at 10-0 after a Maurice Watson Jr. trey before a gritty Providence team fought back. The Friars evened the score at 27-all on a bucket by Emmitt Holt, then tied it again at 29-29 and 31-31.
The Bluejays would lead 39-33 at the break thanks to an 8-0 run just before half, as Omaha natives Patton and Khyri Thomas both scored a pair of baskets. Patton (12) and Foster (10) led Creighton in the scoring column in the first 20 minutes, while Providence was paced by a dozen points from Holt. The Friars led the rebound battle 22-12 at the break.
Providence (11-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) closed to within one point on two occasions early in the second half, drawing within 39-38 and 41-40, before Creighton's lead eventually returned to 10 at 68-58 on a Foster trey with 7:00 to play. The Friars missed seven straight shots during a field goal drought that spanned 7:06 as the Bluejay lead grew as big as 19 before PC scored the game's final five points.
Patton had 20 points and tied his career-high with three blocks. Foster had 17 points and Thomas took over the middle of the game to finish with 16 points. Watson had 11 points and tied his Creighton-high with 14 assists in the win for his sixth double-double of the year. Creighton shot 55.9 percent for the game, including 7-of-17 from three-point range (41.2 percent), and dished 19 assists against just six turnovers.
PC was paced by 17 points and seven rebounds by Holt, while Jalen Lindsey supplied 11 points and five rebounds. The Friars won the rebound battle 42-27, but turned 21 offensive rebounds into just 15 second chance points, and shot 3-of-19 from long-range for the game.
Creighton returns home for a pair of games next week, starting with No. 18 Butler on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Doors to CenturyLink Center Omaha open at 6:30 pm, with $1 soda and beer available at the Bud Bar until tip-off as part of a Fan Appreciation Night promotion.
