Men's Basketball Falls in Closed Scrimmage at Minnesota

Creighton hosts Omaha on Thursday in charity exhibition
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Creighton men's basketball team lost 91-79 on Sunday afternoon at Minnesota in a closed scrimmage between a pair of teams that were in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. The Gophers were ranked No. 15 in last week's preseason USA Today Coaches Poll.
Per NCAA rules, media and fans were not allowed into Williams Arena to watch the contest.
Marcus Foster led Creighton with 19 points, while Martin Krampelj added 16 points, five rebounds and a team-best two steals. Also in double-figures was Khyri Thomas (13). The Bluejays played without Kaleb Joseph, but did get a combined 17 points and 7 rebounds in 47 minutes from newcomers Manny Suarez, Ty-Shon Alexander, Mitch Ballock and Jacob Epperson.
Creighton made 10-of-32 three-point shots and finished with 14 assists on 28 field goals.
Minnesota was led by 24 points from Jordan Murphy, with Reggie Lynch supplying 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. The Golden Gophers shot 50.8 percent for the game and won the rebound battle, 43-37.
Toby Hegner drained a three-pointer on CU's first shot of the game, and a short time later CU took a 15-6 lead after a 9-0 run featuring seven points from Krampelj. The Gophers clawed back to move in front 27-26 with 6:13 left in the first half, and took the lead for good with a 10-0 run to move ahead 41-31.
Minnesota led 43-37 at the half thanks to 14 points from Murphy. Krampelj's 11 points led CU at the break.
CU drew within three points (45-42) just 77 seconds into the second half, but would get no closer. The Gophers margin grew to double-figures after a 7-0 run made it 68-56. Creighton got within five on two occasions before Minnesota closed out the exhibition win with a 91-79 decision.
Creighton hosts a charity exhibition game on Thursday, Oct. 26 at CenturyLink Center Omaha against Omaha. That game is open to the public, with tickets still available for $10 each. Proceeds from the game will go towards the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.
