Despite Late Comeback, Men's Soccer Falls 4-3 Against Marquette

Bluejays trailed 4-0 before scoring three goals during the final 28 minutes
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Creighton men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals during the second half but lost 4-3 against Marquette on Wednesday night at Valley Fields.
The Bluejays dropped to 2-3-2 in BIG EAST play and 8-5-2 overall, while Marquette improved to 3-3-1 in league play and 3-9-2 overall.Â
Noah Franke scored Creighton's first goal of the match during the 63rd minute. Luke Haakenson drifted a ball across the six-yard box towards the far post where Franke headed the ball into the net for his third goal of the season to cut the Marquette lead to three goals, 4-1.
During the 83rd minute, Marios Lomis back-heeled a ball into the back of the net for the Bluejays' second goal. Haakenson served the ball into the 18-yard box where Lomis one-touched the ball with the back of his foot and past the Marquette goalkeeper who was off his line.
Lomis cut the final deficit to one goal with 30 seconds remaining on the clock. Joel Rydstrand serviced the ball towards the far post where Lomis headed the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the night and Creighton's third of the second half.
The Bennebroek, Netherlands, native, recorded his second two-goal match as a Bluejay on Wednesday. He also tallied a career-high nine shots, the most by a Creighton individual since Riggs Lennon fired 10 shots against St. John's on Oct. 1, 2016.
Marquette opened Wednesday's high-scoring affair with a goal during the fifth minute. Connor Alba converted the first shot of the night for the Golden Eagles.
Lomis had opportunities to tie the match during the eighth and 10th minutes, but Marquette goalkeeper Noah Heim made a pair of saves to keep the Bluejays off the scoreboard.
Heim ended the first half with seven saves to preserve the first-half shutout, and ended the night with eight saves.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead with a goal during the 18th minute from Manuel Cukaj.Â
Marquette gained a three-goal lead with Grant Owens' fourth of the season at the 32-minute mark.
Creighton held an 18-10 edge in shots and 8-2 advantage in corner kicks after the first 45 minutes despite trailing 3-0. The Bluejays ended the match with 31 shots, the most since Oct. 24, 2015 when Creighton had 39 during a 5-1 win against Villanova.
The Golden Eagles became the first team to score four goals against Creighton since Notre Dame in 2006 when Ruben Sanchez found the back of the net during the 61st minute.
Creighton goalkeeper Michael Kluver matched a career-high with five saves.Â
Franke ended the match with a career-high six shots and tallied an assist to go along with the Bluejays' first goal of the match. Haakenson matched a career-high with two assists.Â
Creighton is currently in sixth place in the BIG EAST standings with eight points and two matches remaining in the regular season. The top six teams in the final conference standings qualify for the postseason league tournament.Â
The Bluejays return to Omaha for the final home match of the regular season on Saturday night. Creighton will play DePaul on Saturday at 7 p.m. as part of Senior Night at Morrison Stadium.Â
