Baseball Suffers Series Sweep at UAB, Falling 14-1

Birmingham, Ala. -- After sweeping UAB last season in Omaha, the Blazers returned the favor to open the 2017 season as UAB completed the series sweep by defeating Creighton 14-1 on Sunday, Feb. 19.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 0-3 on the season, while UAB moved to 3-0.
Locked in a scoreless battle in the top of the third, freshman outfielder Shane Coker lined a ball down the right field line. Aggressively running the bases, Coker tried to take second, but was gunned down. That decision loomed large as freshman Jason Allbery stroked a single up the middle and pitches hit the next two Bluejays. Senior Bryce Only, however, was retired on a ground ball to end Creighton's threat.
The bottom of the third brought a similar opportunity for UAB. The Blazers' Riley McCown laced a one-out single to left and moved to second via a sacrifice. Back-to-back walks loaded the base with two down, then an error by pitcher Jeff Albrecht led to three UAB runs.
After UAB added another run in the fifth, the Bluejays were bit by one more costly mistake. Facing a bases loaded one-out situation once more, an apparent inning-ending double play became three runs for the Blazers as sophomore Thomas Luevano's throw went into the right field. UAB went on to score four in the frame, followed by another (three unearned) in the seventh to put the game away.
The Bluejays' lone run came in the seventh as sophomore Michael Emodi doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a Blazer error and scored on a double-play.
Creighton committed five errors in the loss, the most by a Bluejay squad since April 22, 2005 when Creighton had five errors against Wichita State. Just three of UAB's 14 runs were earned in the game.
Albrecht took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks in four innings of work. Tanner Graham earned the win (1-0) for UAB, limiting Creighton to just three hits over six innings.
Creighton heads to California next weekend as the Bluejays compete in the Santa Clara Tournament. The Bluejays will open the tournament against tournament host Santa Clara on Friday, Feb. 24, with first pitch slated for 8:00 pm (CT).
