Baseball Suffers 7-3 Loss to Saint Louis in Finale at Santa Clara Tournament

Santa Clara, Calif. – Caught on the wrong side of a big inning, the Creighton Baseball fell to Saint Louis 7-3 in the final game for both squads at the Sana Clara Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 26.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 1-5 on the season, while the Billikens moved to 6-1.
The designated visiting team, Creighton got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman Clark Brinkman laced stroked a one-out double down the left field line to get the Bluejays rolling. Sophomore Thomas Luevano followed with a single through the left side that was bobbled, allowing Brinkman to come home.
Both starting pitchers settled into a groove through the fourth inning, but Creighton added to its lead with a solo home run by senior Riley Landuyt to lead off the fifth.
Up 2-0 with two down and a runner at first in the bottom half of the fifth, things fell off the rails for Bluejay hurler Jeff Albrecht. Nine-hole hitter Cole Dubet worked a four-pitch walk to put runners on first and second, then Aaron Case loaded the bases with a single through the right side. Albrecht's first pitch to Nick Reeser went through the right side to make it 2-1. After a walk knotted the game at 2-2, head coach Ed Servais went to his bullpen.
Junior Ryan Tapani fell behind 2-0 to Peter Sniatynski, before surrendering a grand slam over the left field wall to give Saint Louis a 6-2 edge.
Creighton battled back with a run in the sixth on a double from catcher Michael Emodi and an RBI single from senior Bryce Only, but Saint Louis answered with a solo home run in the seventh.
Albrecht took the loss (0-2) allowing five runs on four hits and four walks in 4.2 innings. Saint Louis' hurler Devin Mahoney moved to 2-0 on the season with the win, limiting the Bluejays to three runs on seven hits and one walk in six innings. Sean Frontzak picked up his first save of the season with three innings of flawless relief.
Brinkman led the Bluejays with two hits on the day, finishing 2-for-4.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, March 3 as the Bluejays begin a three-game series at Abilene Christian at 7 pm.
