Omaha, Neb. -- For the first time in 84 contests, the Creighton Baseball team suffered a shutout on Saturday, April 1 as the Bluejays fell to Winthrop 4-0.
The loss dropped Creighton to 8-13 on the season, while Winthrop moved to 14-13 overall.
Winthrop seized an early 1-0 lead in the second as Mitch Spires led off with a double into the right field corner, took third on a fly out to center and scored via an RBI groundout from Babe Thomas.
From that point it was a pitching battle between Creighton senior Jeff Albrecht and Winthrop's Nate Pawelczyk. Albrecht kept Creighton in the game by limiting Winthrop to just one run on five hits over seven innings, but Pawelczyk was just a touch better. The Eagle hurler carried a perfect game into the fifth and did not yield a hit until two were down in the seventh.
Sophomore Michael Emodi ended the no-hit bid in the seventh by punching a single through the left side. A wild pitch moved Emodi into scoring position, but Creighton was unable to push across the tying run.
Winthrop tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth on a three-run home run off the bat of Anthony Paulsen.
Albrecht took the loss (3-3) for Creighton, while Pawelczyk moved to 4-1 on the season with the win. Pawelczyk allowed three hits, one walk and one hit batter in eight innings of work.
Creighton and Winthrop will play the rubber game of its three-game series on Sunday, April 2 at 12:00 pm.
