Scouting South Dakota State (14-13, 7-5 Summit)
Tuesday's midweek game brings the Jackrabbits to Omaha for the first of two meetings between the two squads. South Dakota State is making its second trip to Omaha of the season as the Jackrabbits swept a three-game series from UNO from March 17-19.
The Jackrabbits enter Tuesday's contest hitting .271 as a team, led by a .333 average from Philip Jacobson. Similar to their mascot, the Jackrabbits can run. Specifically Nick Smith and Anthony Schneider who are a combined 12-of-14 on the base paths.
On the bump South Dakota State will start the game with Hunter Even's 7.15 ERA. As a squad the Jackrabbits enter the contest with a 3.61 team ERA in 229.2 innings. One of SDSU's strengths is their closer Chris Halbur, who boasts a 0.00 ERA in 18.0 innings, grabbing five saves and one win.
BIG EAST Play Brought a New Day for the Bluejays
After opening the season just 1-11, the Bluejays understood that BIG EAST play was the opportunity to start over. Earning a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, which will be played at Creighton's home field
(TD Ameritrade Park Omaha), the Bluejays would then need only defend their own turf.
Creighton took the first step down that path by taking the first series of BIG EAST play from No. 14 St. John's over the weekend.
Bluejays Have Owned BIG EAST Play
Since joining the BIG EAST prior to the 2014 season, Creighton has a
combined conference record of 42-14. During the 19 series, the Bluejays and are 17-1-1 overall, dropping just a series to Xavier last season.
Albrecht and Rogalla Stand Tall Against St. John's
After falling to the Red Storm in 14-innings on Friday, the Bluejays as a squad that starters Jeff Albrecht and Keith Rogalla needed to carry the squad deep to be competitive in the final two contests. Despite allowing two runs in the first inning, Albrecht set the tone on Saturday as he battled to limit the Red Storm to three runs over eight innings. Rogalla raised that bar even higher with his one-run complete game on Sunday.
Albrecht Delivered a Flawless Fifth
After using over 20 pitches in the first, senior Jeff Albrecht needed to be more efficient as the game went on. Albrecht started to tighten things up in the fourth, needing just seven pitches to set the Red Storm down. He got even better in the following frame, retiring St. John's on just three pitches. Michael Donadio laced a single on the first pitch of the inning. Jesse Berardi followed with a routine fly out to center, then Anthony Brocato hit into a 3-6 double play to close the inning. Albrecht's efficient fifth helped him finish eight strong innings, tossing 105 pitches.
