Baseball Ends Season With Loss to No. 20 St. John's at BIG EAST Tournament

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton baseball team fell 10-2 to No. 20 St. John's on Saturday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha during Game 5 of the 2017 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Presented by Jeep.
Creighton's loss eliminated the Bluejays from the BIG EAST Baseball Championship and ended their season at 24-25.
St. John's improved to 42-10 and will play Xavier (31-25) in Sunday's championship game at noon.
St. John's needed only four hits to take a 6-0 lead through its first two times at bat in front of 2,348 fans. Creighton also walked four batters and committed three errors through the opening two frames.
The Bluejays' Riley Landuyt launched a two-run home run during the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to four runs, 6-2. The senior sent a 1-0 delivery into the left-field bullpen for his sixth hit of the BIG EAST Tournament in nine official at-bats.
The Red Storm added to its total with a single run in the fourth from a sacrifice fly.
Creighton threatened in the bottom half of the fourth frame by loading the bases with only one out, but a pop out and ground out ended the inning without a run crossing home plate.
After running into trouble in the fourth, St. John's starter Michael LoPresti retired the final 11 Bluejays he faced. LoPresti went 7.0 innings, allowed five hits and two runs, walked one and struck out five while earning his sixth victory of the season (6-1).
Creighton senior David Gerber pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed one hit and no runs. Gerber finished his career as Creighton's all-time saves (25) and ERA leader (1.95).
Ethan DeCaster also moved into the top 10 of Creighton's ERA list, after throwing 4.2 innings of relief and allowing one earned run on Saturday afternoon. DeCaster now sits at No. 2 on that list with a 2.42 ERA in 104.1 innings.
