Gerber picked during 29th Round by Seattle
OMAHA, Neb. – Former Creighton right-handed pitcher David Gerber was selected in the 29th round by the Seattle Mariners during the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday, June 14.
Gerber joined Rollie Lacy and Keith Rogalla as the third Bluejay to be selected during day three of the 2017 MLB draft.
This year marks the third in the past four in which three Creighton players have been drafted. Since Ed Servais took over as head coach in 2004, the Bluejay baseball program has produced eight years with at least two draft picks, five with three or more and one with four. Overall, Creighton has had 26 draft selections with Servais as head coach.
Gerber ended his four-year playing career as Creighton's career leader in saves (25) and ERA (1.95), and pitched 106 innings in 86 appearances, which is tied for the ninth-most career appearances for a Bluejay pitcher.
The Naperville, Ill., native, finished 2017 with five saves during 25 appearances and recorded 37 strikeouts in 35 innings pitched.
As a junior he tallied 11 saves – the fifth-best single-season mark in program history -- and held a 1.50 ERA in 36 innings.
Gerber is the brother of former Bluejay and current minor league baseball player Mike Gerber (2011-14). Mike (15th round pick in 2014) currently plays for the Erie Seawolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
The Bluejays finished 2017 with a 24-25 record, including a 11-4 mark in league action on their way to a regular-season conference crown.
Three players formerly coached by Servais have reached the Majors -- Pat Venditte (Oakland A's, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners), Darin Ruf (Philadelphia Phillies), and Ty Blach (San Francisco Giants).
