Men's Soccer Finishes Preseason With Shutout of Ohio State

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team defeated Ohio State 2-0 on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium during the Bluejays' final exhibition match of the 2017 preseason.
No. 14 Creighton also defeated SIU Edwardsville and Wisconsin in exhibition matches during the past week.Â
The Bluejays open the regular-season on Friday, Aug. 25 against No. 17 Virginia Tech at Morrison Stadium at 7 p.m.
Creighton jumped out to an early lead on Saturday with a goal during the 12th minute. Marios Lomis headed the ball towards the middle of the box where Anthony Macchione and an Ohio State defender fought for position. Macchione broke free, recovered the ball and fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Bluejays a 1-0 edge.
Creighton held possession for the majority of the first half, and held a 7-1 advantage in shots.
The Bluejays added to their lead with a goal less than three minutes after halftime. Bryce Gibson sent a cross into the box that deflected off an Ohio State defender before Luke Haakenson blasted the ball past the Buckeye goalkeeper to make it 2-0 during the 47th minute.
Ricky Lopez-Espin nearly made it a three-goal Creighton lead with a one-on-one opportunity during the 50th minute, but the Ohio State goalkeeper made a save with his right foot to keep the ball out of the net.Â
Collin Valdivia and Michael Kluver combined for the clean sheet, as Valdivia did not face any shots during the first half, and Kluver made one save during the final 45 minutes.Â
Creighton opens the regular season with a pair of matches next weekend. The Bluejays host No. 17 Virginia Tech on Friday, Aug. 25 and Grand Canyon on Sunday, Aug. 27. Kickoff for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
