Omaha, Neb. -- Despite 20 points from junior Audrey Faber, the Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 92-77 loss to Marquette on Sunday, Jan. 7.
The Bluejays dropped their second straight to fall to 9-6 on the season and 3-2 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette moved to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
A back-and-forth opening period saw the Golden Eagles score the first four points, only to have Creighton answer with a 6-0 run. Faber dropped in two buckets around a layup from sophomore Ali Greene to give the Bluejays a brief 6-4 edge at the 7:18 mark. Marquette answered and held a 17-13 edge with 2:23 left, but Creighton closed the period with five of the final six points to send the game to the second tied at 18-18.
The opening possession of the second saw senior Sydney Lamberty push the Bluejays back up by a deuce (20-18), but Marquette rattled off seven straight to force Jim Flanery into a timeout down 25-20 (7:09). Out of the break Lamberty delivered a traditional three-point play, then Faber scored moments later to knot the game for the fifth time at 25-25 (4:13). Down the stretch neither team pulled away, but a trey from Marquette's Allazia Blockton with five seconds remaining gave the Golden Eagles a 39-36 lead at intermission.
The third quarter got off to a rough start as the Bluejays were outscored 14-2 in the opening three minutes, falling behind 53-38 (6:49). The deficit grew to as much as 19 (66-47) late in the frame, but an 8-1 Creighton run gave the Bluejays hope going to the fourth down 67-55.
Marquette proved too potent on offense in the fourth as the Bluejay were unable to get closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Faber led Creighton with 20 points, while Agnew dropped in 17. Lamberty led the Bluejays on the glass with 12 rebounds. Marquette saw four players finish in double figures, led by a game-high 23 from Amani Wilborn and 20 from Blockton. Natisha Hiedeman and Danielle King closed the contest with 16 and 15 respectively.
