Scouting Creighton
Creighton is 1-0 after a 78-67 win over Western Illinois on Tuesday. The Bluejays made 11-of-23 three-pointers in the win and outscored WIU 30-4 in bench points.
Creighton returns eight lettermen and two starters from last year's team that finished 21-12 and tied for third in the BIG EAST Conference with a 10-8 league record.
The Bluejays advanced to its fifth NCAA Tournament in the past seven seasons, where it fell to eventual Elite Eight qualifier Kansas State.
Juniors Davion Mintz (6.1 ppg., 3.1 apg. in 2017-18) and Martin Krampelj (11.9 ppg., 8.1 rpg.) lead the returners, and sophomores Ty-Shon Alexander (5.5 ppg.), Mitch Ballock (7.3 ppg.), Jacob Epperson (6.3 ppg.) and transfer Damien Jefferson will be counted on to play an increased role.
The Bluejays feature just two seniors, Kaleb Joseph (4.3 ppg.) and Connor Cashaw. Joseph is transitioning to the off-guard spot, while Cashaw is a graduate transfer from Rice after averaging 15.5 points per game last winter for the Owls.
Creighton's freshmen class consists of forward Christian Bishop, center Samson Froling and guards Jett Canfield and Marcus Zegarowski.
Scouting East Tennessee State
East Tennessee State started the season with a 74-68 loss at Georgia State on Tuesday before crushing Hiwassee College, 109-44, on Thursday.
The Bucccaneers were 25-9 a season ago, but feature 10 new faces in 2018-19.
ETSU has out-rebounded teams by a combined 105-61, including 46 offensive boards. Three men had 10+ rebounds in Thursday's win.
Mladen Armus (13.0 ppg., 9.5 rpg.) is one of six Bucs averaging at least 8.0 points per game, with Isaiah Tisdale (11.5 ppg.) and Bo Hodges (11.5 ppg.) not far behind.
Jeromy Rodriguez (11.5 rpg.) and Octavion Corley (10.0 rpg.) are the best rebounders on the squad.
The Series With East Tennessee State
Creighton has never faced East Tennessee State.
Greg McDermott has never faced East Tennessee State and is 3-1 versus teams from the Southern Conference (1-0 at Creighton).
He has never faced Steve Forbes when Forbes has been a head coach.
The Creighton Coaches
Greg McDermott (Northern Iowa, 1988) is in his ninth season as head coach at Creighton, where he is 188-94 with the Bluejays. McDermott has previously been a head coach at Iowa State (2006-10), Northern Iowa (2001-06), North Dakota State (2000-01) and Wayne State (1994-2000). He owns a career mark of 468-289 in his 25th season and is 337-225 in his 18th Division I campaign. McDermott is assisted by Preston Murphy, Alan Huss and Paul Lusk.
What About #2?
Not only has Creighton won 24 straight home openers, but the Bluejays have also done quite well in their second home game of the season.
Creighton has won its second home game of the season each of the last 22 seasons, with 1995-96 the last time that CU didn't open 2-0 at home.
Creighton has won its second home game of the season by double-digits in seven straight campaigns, including a 2016 win over No. 9 Wisconsin.
Rebound Bonanza
Damien Jefferson had to sit out last year after transferring in from New Mexico, but he made up for lost time on the glass.
Jefferson grabbed 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes of work, breaking his previous high by three.
Jefferson's 12 rebounds were the most by any Creighton player in their debut since Cyril Baptiste snared 17 boards in 1969.
Quest For 20,000 Reached
Creighton has scored 20,035 points all-time at CHI Health Center Omaha, passing the 20,000 mark on Tuesday vs. Western Illinois.
Creighton has currently outscored the opposition 20,035 to 16,767 at the 16-year old facility in 258 all-time games in the building that count.
Creighton is 19-1 all-time in games where it moves over any 1,000 point milestone at CHI Health Center Omaha, as seen below:

Starters Stay Consistent
Greg McDermott has said on several occasions that with the variety of options that he has to choose from on this year's Creighton team, the starting line-ups might change more frequently than in past seasons.
Last year's team used five different starting line-up combinations over the course of the season, and didn't make a change until the fourth game of the winter. That change (removing Toby Hegner, inserting Ronnie Harrell Jr.) was necessitated due to an injury to Hegner that caused the fifth-year big man to miss three games.
Since McDermott took over in 2010, Creighton has started the same starting five in the second game as it did in the season-opener.
Going a step further, McDermott last changed his starters for the second game of a season in 2002-03 as Northern Iowa's head coach, when he replaced Pete Schmit with future MVC Tournament MVP Ben Jacobson. Jacobson, ironically enough, was coached at Sioux City East High School by current Creighton Director of Operations Jeff Vanderloo.
Season Opener History
Including last Tuesday's 78-67 win vs. Western Illinois, Creighton now owns a sparkling 86-15 record (.850) on opening day, including wins in 21 of its last 22 lid-lifters.
Creighton has won 12 of its last 19 season-openers by 20 or more points.
The Jays have outscored foes by an average of 85.84 to 61.37 in the last 19 openers.
Opening Statements
Greg McDermott has won each of the last 17 season openers he's coached in, as he is 17-1 at the Division I level in season-openers. That includes double-digit victories in eight of nine games on the Creighton sideline. Overall as a head coach, McDermott is 22-3 in season-opening games.
That includes an impressive 99-point win (137-38) in his first game on the sidelines when he was at Wayne State.

It Gets Earlier Every Year
Tuesday's game took place on November 6, the earliest start date for a season-opener in Creighton basketball history.
The previous earliest date ever came during the 2013-14 campaign, when the Bluejays defeated Alcorn State 107-61 on November 8.
   By comparison, Creighton's season-opener in 1992-93 didn't take place until December 3.
Hello, World
Creighton had four players that made their Bluejay debut on Tuesday night: Connor Cashaw, Samson Froling, Damien Jefferson and Marcus Zegarowski. Two other freshmen, Christian Bishop and Jett Canfield, did not play, and it's expected that Canfield will redshirt.
Below is a look at how Creighton's current players have done in their regular-season and Creighton debuts in a Division I uniform.

Home Opener History
Including last Tuesday's win over Western Illinois, Creighton is 90-11 (.891) in home openers all-time. Â Â Â Â Â Â Creighton has won 24 straight home openers since a Dec. 3, 1994 setback against SMU.
That 24-game home opener win streak is a school record, two more than the 21 straight from 1946-66 that was part of a stretch between 1936-80 where the Bluejays went 41-2 in home openers.
Playing With The Lead
In 258 games at CHI Health Center Omaha all-time, Creighton has not trailed in 73 of those contests, a staggering 28.3 percent of the time.
Under Greg McDermott at home, Creighton is 117-26 and hasn't trailed in 48 of those games.
  Â
November Reign
Creighton is a perfect 59-0 all-time in regular-season home games that take place on or before Nov. 26th.
Creighton has won 62 of its 63 regular-season November home games since 1990, falling only to Boise State in 2012.
Overall, Creighton is 85-16 in regular-season November games at all sites since the start of the 1998-99 campaign.
Preseason BIG EAST Poll Picks CU Ninth
Creighton has been picked to finish ninth in a preseason poll of BIG EAST coaches.
Villanova earned 8-of-9 possible first place votes and finished ahead of Marquette and Providence. St. John's and Butler rank fourth and fifth, while the bottom half consists of Xavier, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Creighton and DePaul.
Creighton is one of two schools (Providence) to match or exceed its preseason prognostication every year since the reconfiguration of the BIG EAST.
St. John's junior guard Shamorie Ponds was tabbed Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year, and Providence's David Duke and Villanova's Jahvon Quinerly shared Preseason Freshman of the Year laurels.
Creighton's Martin Krampelj was a Preseason Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST pick.
#ProJays
For the first time ever, Creighton has five NBA players at the same time as Kyle Korver (Cleveland Cavaliers), Anthony Tolliver (Minnesota Timberwolves), Doug McDermott (Indiana Pacers, Justin Patton (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Khyri Thomas (Detroit Pistons) are all in the league.
Including 2018-18, Creighton has now had an NBA player in 35 of the last 36 years.
Korver leads all active players and ranks fourth in NBA history with 2,223 three-pointers. He's also second among active players and sixth all-time in league history with 43.10 percent marksmanship from three-point range. He set a single-season NBA mark that still stands with his 53.6 percent shooting from three-point range in 2009-10, and is the only player in league history to lead the NBA in three-point percentage four times.
Tolliver is averaging 6.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game on 41.5 percent shooting from deep this season for the Timberwolves.
McDermott is in his fifth season in the NBA, and first with the Indiana Pacers. He's averaging 6.1 points per game on 41.2 percent three-point shooting this year.
Patton is with the Minnesota Timberwolves organization, but currently rehabbing an injured foot. Patton redshirted in 2015-16 before turning pro and being the 16th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. He spent most of last year in the G-League, but did score two points in his lone NBA appearance last April.
Creighton's newest NBA product is Khyri Thomas, who was the 38th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers before being traded minutes later to the Detroit Pistons. Thomas was a two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. He is still waiting to make his NBA debut.
Australian Snipers
You wouldn't think that Australian twin towers Samson Froling and Jacob Epperson are the best marksmen on a team full of shooters, but the numbers might suggest otherwise.
Froling joined Justin Patton as the second 7-footer in Creighton history to make a three-pointer, sinking his only long-range attempt against Western Illinois.
Epperson didn't play on Tuesday, but was 4-for-4 from three-point range last year. He's the first Creighton player to start his career 4-for-4 from three-point range since Johnny Mathies in 2003-04.

The Bluejays own a 214-44 (.829) record all-time at the facility, and have never lost there on a Thursday (7-0) or Friday (14-0).
Creighton's Nov. 25, 2017 win over SIU Edwardsville was the program's 200th at the facility, coming in its 242nd home game. CU's 100th win came on Nov. 17, 2010, a 63-58 win over Louisiana.

Creighton is also 27-25 all-time in the 52 games at the arena in which it's fallen behind by double-figures at any point, 7-9 when down by 10+ points at halftime in the facility, and 34-23 when trailing at halftime at CHI Health Center Omaha.

BIG EAST Playing Big
Though the BIG EAST may not be considered of the traditional "Football 5" Conferences due to its lack of big time football, the performance of the league has been big time for a long time.
The league has owned a top-five RPI in the NCAA RPI rankings in every season since 2000-01, as seen below:

Clear Bag Policy Now In Place
CHI Health Center Omaha has adopted new clear bag regulations for all arena events, including Creighton University men's home basketball games. Bags permitted under the policy include clear plastic, vinyl or PVC totes.
Additionally, small clutch-sized bags will also be allowed inside the arena after a proper security inspection. However, oversized bags or purses will no longer be allowed inside the premises.
After observing the success and ease of transition with arenas and venues across the state, MECA and Creighton University believe the updated policy to be the best safety practice for the thousands of fans who loyally attend each basketball game, and countless concert-goers who walk through the doors at CHI Health Center Omaha.
Here are the main bullet-points of the new bag policy.
•   Clear plastic bags, measuring 12 inches tall, 12 inches long, and 6 inches wide.
•   Small or clutch-sized purses or wallets, not exceeding 4.5 inches tall by 6.5 inches long.
•   One-gallon, clear plastic freezer bags are permitted (Ziploc bag or similar).
•   No large purses, bags, backpacks or fanny-packs will be allowed inside.
•   MECA staff members are not allowed to hold bags during an event.
•   Exceptions will be made for bags with medical necessity after appropriate inspection.
