Agnew's Trey Forces Double Overtime, Finishes with 33 in 87-84 Win at Providence

Providence, R.I. -- Down 79-76 with just 15 seconds left in the first overtime session, sophomore Jaylyn Agnew connected from the top of the key to force a second extra session. The Creighton women's basketball team took advantage with an 87-84 win at Providence in double overtime on Saturday, Feb. 10.
The victory boosted the Bluejays to 15-9 on the season and 9-5 in BIG EAST play, while Providence fell to 9-17 overall and 2-12 in conference action.
After Agnew's trey knotted the game, the Friars had one more chance to claim the game in the first overtime. After Providence head coach Jim Crowley used a timeout to advance the ball, the Friars turned to Clara Che from ten feet away. Her shot was just long and Creighton senior Sydney Lamberty grabbed the rebound to send the game to a sixth period.
The second extra session saw the Friars nab the first bucket. Creighton responded with a trey from sophomore Olivia Elger to surge ahead. After the Friars hit one of two at the line for the 17th tie of the contest (82-82), Lamberty gave Creighton a bit of breathing room with a traditional three-point play. Lamberty drove the to the right side of the bucket, hitting the shot and knocking down the bonus free throw to make it 85-82 (1:51). The Bluejays forced a turnover and were able to bleed the clock down to under a minute, thanks to an offensive rebound from Lamberty.
One Providence regained possession, the Friars pulled within one on a layup from Chanell Williams with 19 seconds left. Once Creighton inbounded the ball, Elger was fouled. The Illinois native calmly hit both from the charity stripe. Providence's final chance resulted in a turnover allowing the Bluejays to move to 5-1 in overtime contests this season.
Entering as the heavy favorite, Creighton raced out to a 9-3 lead in the opening moments (6:29) as the Bluejays got two treys from Agnew as well as one from junior Audrey Faber. Providence, however, countered by driving to the basket to close the quarter on an 11-2 run as the Friars held a 14-11 edge after ten minutes.
The Friars run continued early in the second as Providence pushed its lead out to 25-17 with 6:38 left until the half. Freshman Temi Carda stepped up to rally the Bluejays, powering an 8-0 Creighton run with two three-pointers to surround a mid-range shot from Agnew. Moments later Agnew pushed Creighton out to a 28-27 edge with a trey, but Providence's Jovana Nogic answered from long range as well. A quick five point burst on a layup from sophomore Ali Greene and a third trifecta from Carda gave the Bluejays a 33-30 advantage (1:46), but the Friars dropped in the final five to bring a 35-33 lead into the break.
Another quick start from Providence in the third put Creighton in a 45-40 hole (6:36). The Bluejays continued to fire from downtown, this time it was Faber connecting to spur a 10-4 run down the stretch as Creighton took a 50-49 edge into the final frame in regulation.
Creighton seemed poised to take control as the fourth quarter began when Agnew buried her fourth trey of the game, pushing the Bluejays out 53-49 (8:34). Providence countered with its fourth quarter push, running out to a 60-57 lead with just over four minutes left. Down the stretch the Bluejays took the lead once more on a trey from Faber with 1:58 remaining, 66-64. The two squads battled back and forth over the final 90 seconds. In the final minute the Friars knotted the game at 66, 68 and again at 70-70 with a driving layup from guard Maddie Jolin with just one second on the clock to setup the dramatic overtime sessions.
Agnew's 33 led all scorers, while Carda (17), Faber (13) and Lamberty (11) also finished in double figures. Agnew also led the Bluejays with 11 rebounds, recording her third double-double in Creighton's last four games. Providence got 27 points from Nogic in the loss as well as nine points and 18 rebounds from Jolin.
Creighton has now played six overtime games in its first 24 contests. The Bluejays have played a total of 11 extra sessions, claiming victories in four overtimes at Drake, double overtime at Providence, and in double overtime versus Northern Iowa at home. Creighton also posted wins in overtime at Xavier and against Seton Hall this season. The one loss came on the road at St. John's.
