Women's Basketball Tops Iowa in NCAA Tourney Opener, 76-70

Bluejays advance to Second Round for second straight season
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Jaylyn Agnew and Sydney Lamberty combined for 44 points to lead the No. 11 seeded Creighton women's basketball team to a 76-70 victory over No. 6 seed Iowa on Saturday, March 17th in Los Angeles, Calif.
Creighton (19-12) advances to a Second Round game against No. 3 seed UCLA on Monday at 8 p.m. Central, which defeated American 71-60. The Bruins defeated the Bluejays 72-63 on Nov. 25th in Las Vegas, Nev.
Iowa ends its season with a 24-8 mark.
The teams were tied at 19 after one quarter after Agnew's lay-up beat the buzzer. The Bluejays took a 34-31 lead into the intermission when Agnew found Lamberty for a reverse lay-in in the final seconds of the second quarter. Agnew paced the Bluejays with 11 points in the first half, helping to offset 16 points and 11 rebounds before the break by Iowa All-American Megan Gustafson.
The Bluejays took a 56-50 lead into the fourth quarter, limiting Gustafson to just one shot from the field in the third quarter.
CU stretched its lead in the fourth frame (59-50) to nine when Audrey Faber's three-pointer connected with 8:49 to play, only to see Gustafson answer with five straight points to draw the Hawkeyes within four. But Lamberty would counter with a three-pointer with 6:19 left to push the Creighton lead back to 62-55.
At one point Lamberty would score nine straight for CU, including a hoop with 1:37 left that gave the Bluejays a 68-61 lead and prompted a Hawkeye timeout. Iowa quickly answered with a trey, but the Bluejays would hold on down the stretch as Ali Greene drained two free throws with 56.9 seconds left and Faber two more to give CU a 72-64 lead with 37.8 ticks left.
After Iowa scored, Olivia Elger would be fouled and make one free throw before the Bluejays gained an offensive rebound. Faber would sink a foul shot with 32.0 left, giving CU a 74-66 advantage. An Iowa putback with 25 seconds left narrowed CU's lead to six points. Agnew stepped up once again with two free throws with 19.1 seconds left to close out the victory.
Agnew paced Creighton with 24 points, while Lamberty added 15 of her 20 after intermission.
Gustafson paced Iowa with game-highs of 29 points and 17 rebounds.
Creighton's win improved the BIG EAST to 4-0 in the First Round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, and the Bluejays were the third No. 11 seed to win in the NCAA Tournament this weekend.
