Men's Basketball Falls at Marquette in Regular-Season Finale

Bluejays will tie for third place in BIG EAST standings
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Marquette made 10-of-12 three-point shots in the second half to overcome an 11-point deficit to defeat Creighton 85-81 in the final college game at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 21-10 overall and a 10-8 league mark. The Bluejays will tie for third place in the BIG EAST Conference for the second straight season.
Marquette improved to 18-12 and 9-9 in league play, getting a much-needed win for its NCAA Tournament prospects.
Creighton took a 42-37 lead into the intermission in a half that starred Bluejay junior Khyri Thomas. Thomas scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including three dunks, two steals and four rebounds. The Bluejays led 30-29 with 5:00 left in the first half before Thomas and Davion Mintz fueled the visitors during a 12-3 run. CU led by 10 (42-32) before Marquette scored the final five points of the first half to steal back some of the momentum.
Creighton had nine assists and just one turnover in the first half while shooting 47.1 percent from the field. MU was led by 12 points, five rebounds and four assists by Andrew Rowsey before the break.
The Bluejays led by as much as 11 points early in the second half (48-37) before the Golden Eagles made five straight shots to get within three and get the crowd involved. The Golden Eagles splashed four consecutive three-pointers to move ahead 58-56 with 10:35 to play before a lay-up from CU senior Marcus Foster quieted the crowd and tied the score.
Marquette went up 68-64 with 5:28 to go, but Creighton countered on a bucket from Foster and a trey by Mitch Ballock to retake the lead. Marquette answered with two foul shots by Sam Hauser and a deep three-pointer from Rowsey that forced a CU timeout with MU up 73-69 and 3:13 to play.
Thomas sank two foul shots after the timeout, only to have Rowsey answer from deep again. Foster drove for a Bluejay hoop, but Rowsey sank his third three-pointer in 82 seconds as MU took a 79-73 lead with 1:49 left.
Down six with 44 seconds left, Foster would drain a three-pointer to bring CU within three with 27.5 left. Hauser missed a rare free throw with 27.5 left and Creighton got a look to tie it, but Foster's trey was blocked by Hauser. Rowsey made both foul shots to put MU up by five, only to see Foster answer with a trey with 4.1 left.
CU fouled Markus Howard with 3.0 left, but the sophomore celebrated his 19th birthday by making both shots to ice the game.
Foster had 29 points and seven rebounds to lead Creighton, while Thomas finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and four steals. CU made 11 three-pointers and had 13 assists against just turnovers.
Rowsey had 26 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in his final home game, and Howard contributed 25 points. The duo combined to make 11-of-18 three-pointers for a Golden Eagles team that was 14-of-25 from deep overall. MU won the rebound battle 36-35 and despite being outscored 40-12 in the paint.
Creighton returns to action on Thursday, March 8 at the BIG EAST Tournament, presented by Jeep, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Bluejays are the No. 4 seed and open with No. 5 Providence at 1:30 p.m. Central on FS1. Creighton opened its run to the BIG EAST Tournament final last year with a 70-58 quarterfinal round win over Providence.
