Omaha, Neb. -- In front of 14,169 fans, the fourth largest crowd to watch a Bluejay game at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, the Creighton Baseball dropped a 6-3 decision to Georgetown on Saturday, April 28. The large crowd was in part due to Creighton's 7th Annual Military and First Responders Celebratory Game.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 25-12 on the season and 4-6 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown moved to 16-24 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Georgetown got on the scoreboard first with a run on a walk, a sac bunt and an RBI double from Eddie McCabe in the top of the first.
Creighton, however, responded quickly with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Junior Clark Brinkman struck out to open the inning, but reached on a wild pitch. One out later sophomore Will Roberston lifted an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game. With two men out, junior Jack Strunc laced an RBI single through the left side to give the Bluejays a 2-1 edge.
The game remained in Creighton's favor until the top of the sixth, when Georgetown plated two on a walk and two hits. McCabe started the Hoyas rally with a one-out walk, then Alex Bernauer launched an RBI triple to right. Georgetown seize the lead moments later as Sammy Stevens executed a suicide squeeze with Bernauer charging towards home.
The Hoyas extended their edge to 6-2 with three insurance runs in the ninth, getting a two-run single from Jake Bernstein and an RBI single from Ryan Davis.
Creighton's final tally also came in the final frame as junior Ryan Mantle drove home junior Thomas Luevano, reaching on an error.
Georgetown starter Brent Killam earned the win (5-2), allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 8.1 innings. The southpaw threw 118 pitches in his outing. Nick Morreale retired the final two Creighton hitters to collect his second save of the season.
Creighton starter Mitch Ragan fell to 4-3 with the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits in six innings of work.
Sophomore Isaac Collins led the Creighton offense with two hits in the contest.
Creighton and Georgetown will play the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
