Kloth honored following longest match (3:04) in program history
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Senior All-American Taryn Kloth had a career-high 25 kills but it wasn't enough as No. 13 Creighton lost a five-set marathon match at No. 10 USC on Saturday night.
The contest took 3:04 to complete, the longest match in school history by time, and saw host USC (3-0) win by scores of 28-26, 23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 18-16.
USC survived three set points from CU to take the opening frame, 28-26. The Bluejays trailed for much of the set, but used a pair of clutch Kloth kills to move ahead 24-23. CU had chances to 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25 to take a 1-0 lead, only to be turned back each time. The Women of Troy took the set on a Creighton attack error. Kloth had four kills and Jaali Winters added five kills and three solo blocks in the first set, while USC was paced by six kills from Brooke Botkin.
Creighton (1-2) tied the match in the second set, using a 5-1 run after trailing 22-20 late. Kloth had two straight kills to give CU the lead at 23-22, and after a Trojan attack error it would be Kloth who delivered the set-ending ace. Creighton hit .263 in the second set with both Kloth and Winters adding five kills.
Creighton dug itself too deep a hole in the third set and couldn't completely recover. Trailing 20-14, the Bluejays embarked on a 6-1 run to close within one at 21-20. CU also trailed 22-21 and 23-22 but could not draw even. The Women of Troy won the set after a kill from First Team All-American Khalia Lanier and a officials review that was overturned and resulted in Creighton being in the net. Kloth had six kills in the set as Creighton hit .262. Botkin had seven kills in the third set to pace a USC attack that had 21 kills and hit .354.
Creighton forced the match to a fifth set by winning a 25-21 fourth frame. Knotted at 17-all, a solo stuff of Lanier by Bluejay freshman Annika Welty gave CU the lead, and it would not trail again. CU scored the final three points of the set, getting kills from Megan Ballenger, Winters and Kloth to seal the win.
The fifth set featured 13 ties and six lead changes. The Women of Troy used a 4-0 run to move ahead 11-8, only to have CU respond with four of their own on Winters' serve. With USC leading 13-12, the teams would exchange nine straight sideouts as the Jays withstood three match points by USC before consecutive kills by Lanier. Lanier finished with 20 kills while Botkin provided 25 kills and 12 digs. The Women of Troy hit .360 in the fifth set and .219 for the match.
Kloth's 25 kills eclipsed her previous high of 23, done two years earlier against USC on the same Galen Center floor. She was Creighton's lone representative on the Trojan Invitational All-Tournament Team. Winters had 19 kills and 13 digs while matching her career-high with five blocks. Also in double-figurers was Ballenger, who tallied 13 kills. Madelyn Cole produced her second double-double in as many days with 54 assists and 15 digs, and Brittany Witt topped the Bluejays with 25 digs. Creighton had 67 kills, eight aces, 83 digs and 11 blocks on .184 hitting overall.
The contest totaled 49 ties and 19 lead changes.
Creighton returns to action on Friday in Dallas, Texas, at the SMU DoubleTree Classic. The Bluejays will meet Arkansas State at 10 a.m. before facing North Carolina State at 4:30 p.m.
