FLOSSMOOR, Ill. -- A hole-in-one by senior Rachel Grenko helped lead the Creighton women's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Loyola Fall Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Flossmoor Country Club in Flossmoor, Ill.
Grenko's ace came Monday morning in her opening round of the tournament. She used a seven iron on the second hole, a par 3 that measured 150 yards. It was the program's first hole-in-one in a competition since Betsy Conry on October 21, 2008, but the third in the last four years. Grace Yowell made one on October 4, 2015, not long after Sarah Eversman's ace on October 17, 2014, though both Yowell and Eversman did so in practice rounds.
Grenko shot three rounds of 79 to tie for 15th place with a 237 total. The senior from Sioux City, Iowa, tied for 15th place, the best finish in 14 career competitions at CU.
Creighton's top performer in the tournament was sophomore Amelia Lee. Lee shot rounds of 79 and 80 on Monday before closing with CU's best score of the event, a 77. It was the third-best score in her 31 competitive rounds at CU.
Katie Allen continued the hot start to her freshman season, tying for 26th with circuits of 83, 78 and 81 for a 242 total. Also shooting a 242 was Margaret Hickey, who fired rounds of 85, 79 and 78.
Rounding out the CU contingent was Sydney Gillespie. The senior tied for 41st after rounds of 85, 83 and 79 for a 247 aggregate.
South Dakota won the 12-team meet by 28 shots over both Drake and Loyola (Chicago) with a three-round total of 912. Loyola's Elayna Bowser won meet medalist honors by one shot with a +6 total of 222 after rounds of 76, 70 and 76. Overall, 72 golfers competed on the par 72 course that measured 5,986 yards.
Creighton's team score of 955 put the Jays two shots ahead of Lewis University. It marked Creighton's best team finish in a meet with 10 or more teams since the UMKC Kenneth Smith Classic on Oct. 16-17, 2006.
The Bluejays close their fall season on Oct. 1-2 when it hosts the Creighton Classic at Oak Hils Country Club.
