Karmazin's Top 10 Finish Leads Women's Golf at Powercat Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- A second-round 69 helped Creighton junior Julia Karmazin to a top-10 finish to lead the Bluejays at the Powercat Classic that wrapped up on Tuesday. Creighton finished ninth in the event as a team.
Karmazin tied for 10th place after scores of 78, 69 and 76. It marks her third straight season with a top 10 finish, and the 3-under 69 in Monday's second round was the lowest by any Bluejay this season.
Sophomore Madison Murnan tied for 25th place after a solid showing featuring rounds of 78, 73 and 76 for a 227 aggregate. Her second round 73 was a collegiate-best and helped her secure the second top-25 finish of her collegiate career.
Senior Katharine Marshall posted rounds of 76, 77 and 79 for a 232 total that was good for a tie for 41st place.
Senior Annie Dawson sandwiched a 77 among rounds of 80 that tied her for 47th place with a 237 total, and classmate Karsen Morrison tied for 53rd place following loops of 78, 83 and 78.
Junior Kayla Maletto also played in the competition as an individual and did not factor into the team scoring. She opened with scores of 91 and 93 before withdrawing midway through Tuesday's third round.
Creighton's (310-296-309) total of 915 was good for ninth place in the 12-team event. Tournament host Kansas State shot an even-par 864 (292-288-284) to win the event by 18 shots over fellow Big 12 Conference rival Cincinnati (300-289-293=882).
K-State's Jiarui Chen (66-68-67-201) posted a dominant 14-shot victory over teammate Nanami Nakashima (71-73-71=215) to take home medalist honors in the 70-player field.
Colbert Hills Golf Club hosted the action on its Par 72 layout that measured a lengthy 6,503 yards.
Creighton is back on the course next Monday and Tuesday at the Marilyn Smith Sunflower Invitational in Lawrence, Kan.
