Omaha, Neb. -- Despite a 20-point effort from senior Audrey Faber, the Creighton women's basketball team fell just short in a 54-52 loss to Villanova on Friday, Jan. 4.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 7-7 on the season and 1-2 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova moved to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Things got off to a fast start as the Bluejays bounced out to a 12-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Faber controlled the start, scoring the Bluejays first nine, before a three-ball from junior Olivia Elger forced a timeout from Villanova head coach Harry Perretta with 4:53 left in opening quarter. Following the break each team delivered bursts of four points, but the Wildcats got a trey from Bridget Herlihy to sent the game to the second with Creighton holding an 18-11 edge.
Another fast start for the Bluejays, keyed by a three-pointer from sophomore Temi Carda made it 23-15 with 7:40 left in the first half. Villanova, however, used a 10-0 run to claim its first lead at 25-23 (3:56). The two squads battled back and forth over the final four minutes as Villanova held a 30-29 lead at the half.
A slow paced third quarter saw Creighton reclaim the lead on a layup from Faber, then senior Jade Owens connected from long range to give the Bluejays a 34-30 edge (8:38). Villanova answered with five straight from Adrianna Hahn to take back the lead at 35-34 with 7:35 left. Villanova held a 42-39 advantage with 5:42 left in the period but Creighton scored the final three points of the frame to send the game to the fourth knotted at 42-42.
The final ten minutes of the game saw both team have opportunities, but Villanova held a 52-46 lead with 1:59 left. With their backs against the wall the Bluejays got a three-pointer from Elger to make it a one possession game. Creighton forced a Wildcat turnover, but a missed layup gave momentum back to Villanova. Carda hit a late trey to get the Bluejays within two, but Creighton was unable to get a final heave off in time.
Faber led all scorer with 20 points, while Carda closed the contest with 10 points. Villanova got 14 points from Mary Gedaka and 11 from both Hahn and Herlihy.
