Final tune-up for the Nov. 2 BIG EAST Championships
PEORIA, Ill. -- The Creighton women's cross country teams placed 13th and the men 18th at the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday, Oct. 18. The meet at Newman Golf Course was the final tune-up for both squads before the BIG EAST Championships in two weeks.
John Quigley topped the Bluejay men in the Red race, which was 8,000 meters. The sophomore finished in 47th place with a time of 25:19.8, making him the 14th-fastest Creighton runner ever on an 8K course. Freshman Danny Bohnemann was 78th with a 25:50.6 clocking, more than 90 seconds faster than each of his previous 8K finishes this fall.
CU's next five finishers were all closely bunched together. Max Wehrle took 120th in a time of 26:36.2, just ahead of Aidan King's 131st place time of 26:49.2. Micah Navarro placed 136th as he crossed the finished line in 26:58.9, two places ahead of Nick Monkemeyer (27.14.8). Rounding out the Bluejay contingent was Michael Buckley. Buckley placed 143rd in a time of 27:28.4.
The Bluejays also had three entrants in the White race, which opened the day. Boston Small took 45th with a time of 27:15.0, Jackson Stamper was 56th with a time of 28:05.0 and Bryce Shirley finished in 28:30.7 to take 68th place.
The men's Red race was won by David Hatfield, who was competing unattached, and traversed the 8K course in exactly 24 minutes. Illinois' Irwin Loud was the top collegiate performer with a clocking of 24:11.6. The men's Red Race featured 165 runners, while the White race featured 133 entrants.
Danielle Hotalling led Creighton for the 10th time in as many career races, placing 15th after crossing the finish line in a time of 21:32.8. It was more than two minutes better than her previous best 6K time this fall, and moved her into seventh place on the program's all-time best list. Her time was also more than 35 seconds better than both times she ran on the same course a year ago as a Bluejay freshman.
Junior Caroline Pass took 64th with a 22:36.3 clocking, edging out sophomore teammate Marguerite Hendrickson who was 72nd (22:41.0).
Rounding out CU's contributors to the team score were junior Katie Fukushima (97th; 23:07.6) and senior Haley Fye (110th; 23:19.8).
The women's race featured 23 teams and 180 runners. Host Bradley won the team title with 67 points, holding off South Dakota (103) for the team title. USD did boast the meet champion, as Abby Ripperda (20:49.9) out-paced Bradley's McKenzie Altmayer (21:03.8) for the individual title.
Creighton returns to the course on Nov. 2 in Somers, Wis., for the BIG EAST Championships.
